You'd be surprised how much just using a window mount improves your reception. The mount ($20) basically just puts the phone in the best possible position. It's basically doing the exact same thing as hooking up an external antenna and putting it up on your roof does.
Now here's some advice from someone who works in the industry: You should stay away from repeaters and boosters like the one posted for CDMA phones (VZW, Sprint). With CDMA, it doesn't matter if you have one bar or four ... as long as you have a bar of reception, you'll have the same voice quality as full reception. With GSM (AT&T, T-Mobile) phones, however, signal strength actually affects voice quality. Boosters and repeaters take a low reception signal and amp/re-broadcast the signal. So no signal still equals no signal, and low signal becomes better signal. That's great for GSM but it doesn't do anything for CDMA.
