Default Top of the line iMac

The wife wants a new desktop for christmas and I have always wanted one powerful enough to play games on. So I've been looking at desktops for awhile now and I'm very much liking the imacs. I was thinking about just going for it and getting the 27 inch version with the i7 quad core processor.

I'd like to here peoples thoughts on this. Does anyone own one and are they a good machine?

For games, no it is crap. The only reason to get it is for the aesthetics of it and/or the operating system. If you have the space I would recommend getting a nice case and building your own. Don't get it because you want performance in games or other GPU/CPU intensive programs. Building your own desktop will give you more processing power for the same amount of money.

I've owned 5 Apple computers with the newest being a C2D iMac and MacBook Pro. Every single on of them have had hardware issues. Out of all of the computers I've built (3) my only issue was a MoBo failing, but I cheaped out on it when I picked it out.

It may sound like I hate them from my post. I don't, just gaming, processing power and price aren't their strong points. I love the unix based command line and how they look.

I've noticed that people here are critical of macs as well. I'm not sure why. Often, the people most critical of them have never owned one. I definitely recommend buying her the computer! I consider myself an experienced computer guy and I've had tons of trouble with the PC's i've owned. On two of them, I spent more time fixing them than enjoying them. I can't stand them. I got a 24" iMac (top of the line back in 2008) and it still works like the day i bought it. Some days I'll use it for 6-7 hours straight. I've done all nighters with it too. In other words, it puts up with my abuse quite well. I've got 3 OS's on it. Snow leopard and windows 98 & XP (both virtual machines). I've never tried gaming with it, so I'm not sure how it performs there. With parallels, you can set aside a certain amount of ram necessary for the OS to run your game. I even have it connected to my TV via DVI -> HDMI for netflix streaming. It works without a hitch. In fact, it hasn't left my desk for repairs since the day I got it. (Valentine's Day '08).

I've also got a 13" macbook pro that I use for taking notes in class... I've only had it a few months, but so far, no problems. Snow leopard is a very stable OS.

I definitely recommend buying it! I don't know what you're using now, but if it's a PC, it will take some adjusting to get used to mac. But it's worth buying. My 24" iMac has been a great performer.

Ordered I came down one step from the top and bought the next best thing. The top of the line model was overkill for me. I also took out the extra warranty and purchase the iwork software.

Yay!! Congrats, man. You'll really enjoy it. The top of the line macs are definitely overkill. Mine's got a intel C2D 2.16 that works fine and that's ancient now!
