I got a 24" iMac (top of the line back in 2008) and it still works like the day i bought it. Some days I'll use it for 6-7 hours straight. I've done all nighters with it too. In other words, it puts up with my abuse quite well. I've got 3 OS's on it. Snow leopard and windows 98 & XP (both virtual machines). I've never tried gaming with it, so I'm not sure how it performs there. With parallels, you can set aside a certain amount of ram necessary for the OS to run your game. I even have it connected to my TV via DVI -> HDMI for netflix streaming. It works without a hitch. In fact, it hasn't left my desk for repairs since the day I got it. (Valentine's Day '08).
I've also got a 13" macbook pro that I use for taking notes in class... I've only had it a few months, but so far, no problems. Snow leopard is a very stable OS.
I definitely recommend buying it! I don't know what you're using now, but if it's a PC, it will take some adjusting to get used to mac. But it's worth buying. My 24" iMac has been a great performer.
