opinion on solid-state hard drive ?

I,m gonna be buying a new laptop. Don't know if I should get one with the new SSHD or conventional one. What do u think ?

SSD advantages include faster read times (machine will boot faster/applications will load faster), more durable, shock proof, uses less power, runs cooler. Drawbacks include higher cost, less capacity, and finite number of writes lifespan (though this is less of an issue with newer drives).

I recommend them for laptops if you don't need hundreds of gigabytes of storage.

I love my SSD what can i say. Boot times are huge and for applications that typically load slower there has been a huge improvement.

There are 2 different types... SSD which is your Solid state drive which is all flash memory and they are really fast. Then there is SSHD which is your solid state hybrid drive, the SSHD drives still have your platters just like a regular hard drive but they also add flash memory, in essence it is faster than your conventional hard drive because these hybrid drives remember which applications, etc you use most and stores that in the flash memory thus being able to load it faster the next time you use it. Just thought I would mention all this because you said SSHD not SSD drive

If cost isn't an issue, get the laptop with a standard HDD and upgrade it yourself to a SSD. SSD development still has a long way to go, so its important to pick a good company and an SSD with high reviews and good ratings. I'd recommend Intel's 300 series and 500 series depending on your needs. Those drives have given me 0 problems. Also, make sure you run windows 7 because it has TRIM support. If you have a Mac, OS X Lion which comes out anytime this month will have TRIM support too. Google and Newegg are your friends for SSD research.

Also make sure to look at the specs on the SSD drives, most of them have very good read and some have very crappy write speed, if you see a SSD with with like 230 MB/sec read and 70 MB/sec write it has slow write speed so you will not like the drive, now on the other hand if you see one with 280 MB/sec read and and 250 MB/sec write then go for that one. your laptop will be flyin

Try and buy a laptop that has SATA III capabilities.

Kinnda late, but I'd honestly just get an SSD, then get a cheap external. You can get those for what, 50 bucks for a terabyte. Unless, of course, you need to have a lot of on demand storage. Then get a 7200RPM HDD.

This is not to say you shouldn't have an external regardless. Or, as others have said, get the cheapest HDD, the upgrade your self. Just do the math and get what's cheapest.
