Own More than One RD? Why? How?
I was wondering... for all of you guys with more than one detector.
Q1. *Why* do you have more than one?
Q2. *How* and *when* do you use them? You're not supposed to run more than one at a time, right?
On a related topic, I'm going to road-test the V1 vs. the X50 in an upcoming road trip. I'm planning on using one for the first half and the other for the way home. Again, I shouldn't use them both simultaneously, right?
Q3. Any suggestions for the test?
Q4. I'm traveling through PA, OH, IN and MO. Any tweeks for either of these units that I should use or should I just go plain vanilla out of the box.
if you live in a radar area the whole of the usa loves radar then most people have a back up detector because if one breaks you always have a back up......
here in the uk cops dont have in car radar, so a radar detector isnt a real must have they only pick up live gatsos and detector depending laser guns......because everywhere is crammed and heavy congested the only speed traps which i do see are gatsos, and camera vans although i've been unable to find the camera van even though i'm looking for it...
were as in the us every cop cars got radar, and the highways are far far more open and bigger than ours so another back up detector is a must!
the v1 is good for open highway, where as the escort is good for city and roads which are not as open as the highway......
you could just use one all the way, its intirely up to you if you want to swap it over half way through the trip...
As far as I know "Traffic Police" in the UK pretty much all have radar!
I have both the V1 and the X50. I've had a V1 for years and got the X50 last fall. I got the X50 for the following reasons:
1. I wanted to have a backup detector, because my V1 was falling out of tune and needed to be sent in for service, and I didn't want to go unprotected for that week or so.
2. I wanted to compare the V1 with the X50.
3. I wanted a detector I could easily use in different cars. My V1 is hardwired and in a visor pouch, and I lost all my V1 accessories (suction cups, lighter cord etc.) in a house fire.
4. I wanted to support Roy, so I bought the X50 from him.
You are correct that you shouldn't run both detectors at once, as they can interfere with each other and degrade performance. But using one for one leg of the trip and the other for another is fine.
If I'm passing you on the right, YOU are in the wrong lane!
If speed kills, how come I'm still alive?
Active Countermeasures: V1 3.858, Escort Redline, Beltronics STi-R+, LI Dual 7.1x CPU/8.7 Heads (front)
Other/Backup Countermeasures: V1 3.813 (loaned to friend), Beltronics Pro RX65 M4 6.3
Vehicle: 2002 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro
LEO Toys: Kustom Pro Laser II & III
Encounters/Saves August 2011: Radar 3/1, Laser 0/0
Since you own both, what's your recommendation if I'm only going to purchase one? It would be primarily for highway use in PA/NJ/DE.
Re: So, KPatz
NJ is the land of X band. Get a V1 for it's superior X band detection. If you like the blue display (I happen to like it) the X50 will serve you well. I would go with the V1 overall.

i don't own 2 but unlike these people i drive through that area and have driven though it abuot weekly when i went to college (which was a few years ago) and still at least 10 times a year. v1 for x and k band in NJ as well as alerting you to laser traps. v1 wins in every test with x and k band as well as laser, sml, gol, veil, and car and driver. in pa instant-on is big, and if you picked up the leo shooting someone else from a far distance the arrows can give you a big clue. in de is like many of the other states that use Ka band, any of the top 3 will do the same. maybe easier with the x50 and rx to deal with ka. i would use any of the top3/4 in ny as they use ka and some of them are even better at ka than the v1. but in nj, especially with turnpike police setting up traps using multiple cars, v1 hands down. this is as unbiased as of a biased (yeah what an oxymoron) an opinion as you can get from a v1 user that travels through the area.

es13 raven comes to mind. he has both, and has had all 3 now that i think of it. air also has both the x50 and v1 but is somewhere in upstate ny. maybe one of them can help you out with your decesion.
Yoda of Radar
It depends on a few things on buying an X50 vs. a V1.
Are you mostly driving in city or highway? Overall the X50 is my pick, because its detection (on all bands is top-notch), but seems to false a fair amount less then the V1, especially solves any issues with ghosting, and scary 'J' issues.
However if you do mostly highway/open-road/unpopulated area driving, the V1 is top kid on the block in X&K bands (on most V1's), the X50 decently close in K, but not X... Ka band is a whole different animal.
Mostly city: The x50 for the reasons mentioned above... great range but with a substantial amount of less falsing/ghosting/missing(Junking) alerts. Not to mention On-the fly programing much easier then the V1'S.
Price: The x50 Red is 100dollars less then a V1, and the Blue is about 50, The blue is the brightest display on any detector I have used... and is extremely versitile in its applications, some people are distracted by it at night.
If you need arrows the V1 is obviously the way to go (they have never 1 time helped me, and are often wrong on my unit especially in the city, but most people swear by them), and the upgrades in the future.
BOTTOM LINE: You can go wrong, they both offer top-notch detection across all bands...each with its ups and downs, and IMO each serves its own purpose and has its own niche.
*A side note: My V1 sucks (or is just waiting to prove itself and shock me) so people always say I am bias and negative about the V1... but I am just giving you the truth from my experience, I have used older V1's and they were superior (and more predictable) then mine.*
However I am in CNY (close to upstate) so I dont get much into NJ.
Because I cant resume to sell my old rd
I kept my 2 old vector , 1 sensoro , 2 old V-1 , 1 bell laser sensor only.
Now I use an Sti.
In addition to my V1, I still have my old Passport (X and K only). I haven't thrown it away because I may want to use it for a test or something later.
