What is the J problem I've been reading about? How prevalent is it? When does it happen? What causes it? How serious a problem is it? I haven't yet purchased a V1 and would like to understand this better. Thanks.

The "J" alert on the V1 is designed to terminate Ka false alerts that are caused by "Junk" detectors in the vicinity. However, some people on here have had the V1 "J" out an alert to real police radar.Originally Posted by radarTom
As far as what causes it, there's a couple of theories:
1. There is junk detector in the area at the same time as police radar
2. Overloading at close range causes image frequencies that result in the V1 J'ing out the alert.
Who knows what the real cause is. According to Valentine Research, the problem is fixed, but some users have reported otherwise.
Interesting. I talked to VR today about the J problem. The Tech indicated that the problem arose with POP detection being integrated into the V1. Apparently, the signal that junkie detectors emit is similiar to that of POP and with the increased POP sensitivity a challenge to the junk-detection algorithm (my words) developed. He indicated that the problem was addressed in the last firmware update.
Even so, we agreed that junk filtering is not a perfect science. It's difficult. I suggested that instead of the J muting out perhaps it could give a different, lower audible alert or some other kind of response... He seemed to value that suggestion and said he'd pass it on. (Now that I'm thinking about it, perhaps they could just give it more time to process. Perhaps the signal would become more discernible with a few more seconds of capture?)
On another note, I also asked him whether or not VR would consider allowing owners the option of doing their own firmware updates instead of having to mail them in. He said that they've been talking about that lately. He said that due to chip changes, they can quickly flash the chips in-house. So, it is possible that we would be able to do it. But it's not going to happen immediately. The V1 would likely need a USB port to do this well/easily. I reiterated how valuable it would be for many of us to have this capability.

and was under psl ..but this could happen again.
I will reboot when j'd out .I think this is a bandaid but should work.
Does anyone know how long the j out block remains on the detector.??
This is some sort of auto blocking device is it not.??
.
The J alert blocks Ka signals for about 20 seconds, according to user accounts on this forum.

Is the j alert turned on by default? Can it be turned off in programming? I'm getting ready to order a returned unit, and I DO NOT want v1.8 if you cannot turn it off.
My impression is that this is a problem that occurs under very specific conditions (as well as it's understood anyway) and that other times the J function works just fine. Who has had problems with J muting a real signal? How many have not? I haven't ordered my V1 yet, but I don't believe that the J will stop me. (I think...)
I have had the V1 'J' a real alet on me (a few times now), so even if the V1 'J's a signal I slow down regaurdless.
Was that with POP on or off?Originally Posted by AirMoore
