    Default Low Voltage question.

I purchased an invisocord and installed it as the directions imply for my V1. There is a slight problem, on startup - the mirror only gets 8.2V so the V1 is making a funny startup sound within 2 seconds its at a full 12.8V.

Just curious is it possible for this to hurt the V1 in anyway?

I never like sending crazy voltage to my V1 but there has been no proof that sending low voltage to a V1 ruins it. Check your alternator as it may be weak and not charging your battery. Also...if your battery has been used for 50,000 miles or so I would suggest replacing it

Why not turn the rd off while you startup. Than - once it will have the abillity to get the 12v it wants and needs.

I can only guess that giving it less than it wants is anything but good.

Well, its not really a problem with the altenator. The way the invisocord works is you plug it into the back of your rearview mirror. Then when you turn the ignition to ACC it then turns on the radardetector. Since its a 2 step process it cuts the voltage for just a second thus making it get the 8.3

I was thinking about putting the Valentine fuse they give you when you buy the remote display on it just to be safe. Would this help keep it safe?

Would like 1 second to 2 seconds of 8.3V hurt it in the long run or is there nothing to worry about?

from a scientific standpoint i don't know what the long term damage, if any, would be.

from a personal standpoint i wouldn't trust it. detectors do funny things sometimes when they don't get the voltage they like.

i would either do what bauzer71487 said, or add a seperate master switch to turn it on and off. if you forget to turn it off, it will still shut off when you turn off the car.

if it's making a strange sound, somethings not right, and you don't want to wait until you get stopped to find out the V1 wasn't working right.

here's a thread on a similar discussion regarding voltage and possible issues.

interesting. I'm going to email invisocord and see what they have to say. But from now on I'll be turning that sucker off and on by hand

by the sound of it your getting voltage drop, because as your cranking the engine, not only is there 50,000 volt going through the spark plugs but there is some juice being pulled by the starter motor!

i'm not sure if low power is bad for the detector as much as high power is...

but i just dont think it works right with low power, think of your cd walk man when your batteries get low the sound quality drops resulting in destortion!

in the case of a radar detector the detector wont be sensitive enough to detect scatter, this is one of the problems faced by the battery powered detectors. to maintain performance you need a constant power supply at a static voltage batterys dont do this very well.. from the second you draw power from them the voltage is on the decline!

i remember EEnerd mentioning that if a RD doesn't get suffient power then it will not operate in the manner it should. i would make sure it gets full power.

Yeah mine does the same thing from ACC to actual start up. This is why I start my vehicle then turn on the detector. I believe everyone should have the same thing...on, off, then on real quick. I don't like sending crazy voltage to my detector
