15 years of V1 Ownership - I am done.
I got my first V1 in 1992. Been upgrading ever since. I have every accessory Valentine Research makes. I have spent thousands on their stuff over the years. It's been a great run. I love the directional capablilites of the unit, which are still unique in the industry. I still think the unit looks cool, something that belongs in the cockpit of a jet fighter. I have hooked up the V1 in just about every configuration, running wires down A-pillers for years, remote head units, etc.
So, as you can imagine, I had not looked at other RD's for years. After getting the Bel 995 for my second car, I was surprised how far the competition has come, the unit performed as well as my V1, IMHO. Less falsing, same sensitivity (except laser), much easier programming, features such as auto-mute, smaller, probably less of a theft target, voice, great display, tech mode, etc. And these V1 firmware issues are wearing me out. I had to go from 3.821 to 3.826 just to get option 7 and the K-Band muting to work
I think it's time to liquidate my V1 and the complete 'collection' of V1 accessories. Sort of dissapointing, but Valentine research (IMHO) had a competitive unit, and it still works pretty good (albiet quite noisy), but has lost it's edge over the competition. And let's not forget price, you should expect more when you pay more.
I know these guys can be biased, but this pretty much sums it up for me (see the V1 portion at the end of the article):
