I just found this forum by accident and have to put in my two cents.
I've been running detectors religeously since the mid 80's when my orignial Escort mounted on the dash of my MR2 saved my bacon in a race down the Florida Turnpike with a Porshe. At about 122 mph the escort burped and I slam braked it and got to laugh at the Porsche two miles later visting the FHP. Shortly after that the car and the Escort were stolen.
Since then I ran them all and longed for that old Escort until about a year and a half ago when I got a V1. It is mounted so it looks out just below the tint strip just to the right of the rearview, hardwired down to the remote in mid console. Totally invisible to the outside.
From the moment I turned it on I loved the old Escort style gieger counter alert tones with variations for bands ... who need LED's. Better yet was adjustable mute ... wow, now I can mute and still have full input by sound? Yes! But nothing prepared me for the arrows, oh those lovely arrows.
I was running through South Carolina just last month on a trip in a group of about 6 cars moving well through traffic maybe 90, 95 ... I could tell everyone had detectors and for about 100 miles everyone got about equal alerts based on the fact that everyone slowed and sped at about the same times. Then in SC I got a Ka alert ... that usually means the law so I backed her on down as did everyone else. Sure enough as we rolled down, there was SC State sitting in the median and the V1 was just buzzin away. We all rolled safely by!
But wait... what's this, as we passed the lawman and everyone is beginning to pick up speed, I look and my arrow still say FRONT ... huh, he's behind us now right? So, as everyone else took off in a sprint I looked again and held 70 in the right lane because the arrow still said FRONT and the buzz wasn't backing down. As I approached a rise about 1/2 mile ahead there was a trooper tucked way deep in the brush and my arrows flashed across, then back as I slid past him at 70. About another half mile down the road were about 15 chase cars with about five of them currently busy with my previous travel companions. I did wave as I passed.
This is not a unique story. I love the fact that the V1 litterally TALKS to me and tells me EXACTLY where the law is. Bless its little electronic soul it is one of my best friends because while any detector will tell you the law is there, only the V1 will tell you WHERE!
