A week ago I received my V1, which I had been planning to get but putting off for years now. Previously I've been using a Bel 980 for 6 years and very happy with it. Custom programmed and well used to its personality in each situation, I have never received a radar ticket with it. But its age, a few quirks, and my desire for the extras only the V1 has plus a few instancas where I know the V1's bogey count would have made a difference, made me want to upgrade.
Despite ordering ground shipping, it was shipped fedex 2-day and arrived 4 days before I expected.
I quickly mounted it in the parking lot when picking it up from FedEx and left it in A for the drive home. In the first few miles, the bogey counter reached its highest 7 thanks to all the door openers I was passing. A few more days with A and l both proved annoying, so I run it in L. I always had X disabled on my Bel but I think I'll like X on with L better--just in case.
I've run it on opposite sides of the windshield with my Bel so I can convert myself mentally to the differences. The V1 has laser falsed twice, no doubt due to its much larger lens, none from the Bel (that is rare-but then it also never goes off when I'm really being lasered). But the V1 has not let out a peep during K and Ka falses from the Bel--which I do hear quite regularly, and I've always assumed were as I called them spurious emissions, or perhaps a radar down a passed perpendicular road. They've made me completely ignore anything in the 1st or 2nd bars on the Bel, unless it sticks around. The times when the V1 does go off on X or K at low levels are fixed bogeys that are always there, which of course is how it should work. I seem to get a Ka J in my driveway every once in a while.
I've only come across two actual police radars so far (they rarely run at rush hour when I do most of my driving), once the bel picked up a hair sooner than the V1, the other time the V1 a few seconds before the bel. Of course this will take some time, but I expect physics will determine's V1's larger horn to win.
I am a do-it-yourselfer and have already direct wired the V1. This weekend I fabricated a mount for the remote display so it attaches to the back of my tach and is in easy reach and view while driving:
In the next week I also hope to construct a mount to screw the V1 into my roof or headliner as I'd prefer not to have anything suction cupped to the windshield (I've had things fall off while driving, and the cups call attention from the outside).
I also plan to change the LED colors on my remote display as described here, my LEDs are in the mail. I'll post the results of both of those in this thread as well.
