I have a V1 that I purchased in 1994-95 that has never been upgraded. It works well and I have never had any proplems with it. Do I need to upgrade it? Valentine wants $279 plus shipping. I live on LI and work in Manhattan. My detector has lasar with just the front antena. Should I spend the money?

Yeah, it is definitely time to upgrade it then, lots have changed in 10 years, I'm just amazed you never sent it in for an upgrade before.

A few of us prefer the older 1.7 but if yours never got the 97' upgrade then it is pretty bad on Ka has no mode memory, falses more on Ka but newer ones probably false the same on Ka as yours because of POP.
X band was improved as well.
1.8 has slightly better Ka than post 97, POP, Euro, better laser, 1/4" smaller, IMHO laser is too good as it falses laser cruise control.
Another thing that I did not like was that on the newer V1's K band ghost's 2-4 bogy's on a single speed sign.

Thank you both for the info. Is Ka used in NY? If it is then I guess I should upgrade. Do they offer the 97 upgrade now for the 1.7? That might be all I need. Thanks again

They will probably charge you $275 (or is it $175?, someone please correct) to upgrade, because they will give you a new radar (v 1.8) with the latest software.

$279 I don't believe that you can get a partial upgrade, have to go all the way.
You get to keep all your old hardware, just send the unit and you will get a new one.
If money is tight you can sell it on fleebay and get bank for any V1 then buy a returned unit for 10% off.

Thanks for the info guys. I guess I'll have to go for it. One thing I would like to have is the band leds. Does anyone know if they use Ka in NY? How about X? I don't think I've come accross X in NY in quite a while. I have seen it in Jersey, though. Thanks again....

See if they can do an upgrade to 1.8 without POP. That's the upgrade I have and it has the maximum sensivitity without the falsing caused by POP software. In little l mode it runs quiet as a mouse, much quieter thant the Passport I tested it against, in city driving. I may be taking a risk not having POP, but the tradeoff in not falsing is well worth it. I was really hoping the 9500 with GPS lockout would be something to consider, but early tests show the range is no better than the X50, which is quite a bit less than the V1. So, right now a V1 with 1.8 seems to be the best choice for range and reduced falsing.
