    Default V1 bug? (3.813 firmware)

Coming home tonight I encountered a nest of state trooper cruisers and my V1 did something strange. Two cruisers were merging on to the highway and a third was up ahead parked on the side of the highway (this was in a construction zone). My V1 was sounding off Ka band, 1 bogey ahead. As I passed the parked cruiser, I happened to glance at the display, and noticed that the arrows were acting as if there was more than one bogey being tracked, but the counter stayed at 1. For example, the front and rear arrows were lit, and the rear arrow was flashing, as if it were telling me the rear bogey was stronger than the front, but why was the bogey counter at 1?

I've never seen it do this before, but then I've never encountered multiple Ka bogeys before either, so is this a known bug in the V1? Pre-POP 1.8 version, firmware 3.813.

Has this been fixed in newer firmwares?

I saw that once or twice before I upgraded from 3.813 to 3.824. My assumption was just that the signal was bouncing everywhere and confusing the unit. Could be a glitch, but the arrows worked great 99 times out of 100.

I am surprised that no one has brought this up until now.
My 1.7 started doing this after my 97 retrofit every single time that I encountered a real LEO never a false which in itself is kind of cool.
I will get the bogy lock tone a shadow arrow that blinks around and only one in the count. Tech services said that this is normal.
My 3.818 that I had for a few weeks never did it I was under the impression that it was fixed.
It did however have multiple bogy's on single K band speed signs. That drove me nuts and was the reason that I returned it. I'll bet the glitch is that it is reading multiple frequencies.
I am surprised that no one talks about this except Racer X and Jim have had this happen.
The other thing my 1.7 and my 3.818 do or did is when approaching a K band speed sign I will get an occasional second bogy Ka.
Any body else experience any of these or is it just CA?

I've seen this happen occasionally when near a cruiser running K band. A weak, second Ka bogey would appear when near the cruiser. I figured it was caused by noise or distortion (harmonics?) from the really strong K band signal.

I've had this happen before on ka band. I think brick called it on the money about the signals bouncing around. i had passed a ka unit, and the arrow was to the rear, one bogey. As i approached an overpass in front of me, the arrow jumped to the front, and i was expecting to see another unit under it, since this is a hiding spot they use, but there wasn't any, and as soon as i passed through, the arrow jumped back to the rear. It showed only one bogey the entire time.

On strong k band hits, i have seen multiple bogeys from one source, mainly in constant mode, as in the longer the signal duration, the more "ghosting" that occurs. With a k band gun, i can get it to not only show multiple bogeys on k , but it will also light up ka. the k still flashes as the stronger alert though.

As soon as i have more time between road trips, i'll be sending mine back for the upgrade.

I thought i had captured that on video, but overwrote it, since the overall encounter wasn't worthy of the video forum, but i just found it on a batch download i did. i'll edit it and put a link for anyone that wants to see it. i had the camcorder on the display , and you can watch the arrows, and see the shadow as i go under the overpass.

Okay, here it is, lg and sm.

But did you ever see two arrows lit at the same time, with the bogey counter at 1? I can understand the arrow switching from front to rear to side due to reflections, but only one arrow should be lit at a time if the bogey counter is 1. In my case, more than one arrow was lit, and one was flashing indicating a stronger signal from one direction, but the bogey counter still said 1.

I've had that happen, both with my old 1.7 V1 and my 1.8 V1. I figure it's from harmonics or distortion due to the strong signal.

Good question. The video shows it do that, but only momentarily. I can only say "maybe", but i honestly don't remember for sure if it has ever done that for an extended period of time. I'll have to pay closer attention to see if it does that.

RacerX, I watched your video and I did see more than one arrow light up briefly with the bogey counter at 1. I have a couple questions though:

In your video, I heard the bogey-lock tone. Did the counter go up to 2, and then back down to 1, or did it stay at 1?

What firmware version were you on at the time of the video?

In my case, I never heard a bogey-lock tone, and the counter never went higher than 1. But I saw two arrows lit at the same time, one arrow flashing to indicate the "stronger" signal. Since there was more than one cruiser on the highway at the time, I don't know if it was a single bogey or multiple.

It went to 2 briefly, but by the time i swung the camcorder down to the concealed display it was at 1 again.

I'm still on 3.818 I have an email into VR about several things. they responded saying the techs will go over the list and get back to me. I have another road trip next week, then i plan on sending it in for the upgrade/fix.

Hmmm..., yeah, that's hard to call. My guess is that just the one that was stopped had radar on and it picked up a reflection just right, similar to mine, but longer in duration.

In that same area, maybe a week or so before that, i picked up a ka signal ahead, and came up on a DPS with someone pulled over on the off ramp. as i approached to turn around and maybe get some more video, i got a second signal, and thought it was "ghosting", but then i looked down to the underpass and saw another unit in one of their favorite hiding spots, clocking people.
I had that on video too, but i think i overwrote that one.

I would probably say for now not to worry too much. If this happened constantly, or your range started diminishing then i might be concerned that it's time for a fix. at a minimum, if you did decide about sending it in, i would wait for a bit, to see how the latest revision is and if all the bugs are fixed.
