Default The truth about tint strips reducing detection ability

Ok, i have read many threads where this is debated.

I have the tint dots above my rvm but I want to mount my V1 there. I will most likely try to mount the antenna below this area and only place the suction cups in the tint strip. I will be using packing tape so it should work fine from what I have read. Anyway, what is the real answer here as to reduced sensitivity??

Has anyone confirmed it has actually reduced laser or radar reception. I plan to do radar testing but as testing laser that is a little harder. I guess I could use something that emits ir light to possibly fool it into going off on laser.

    Thanks

from the threads I've read, as long as the blue tint is NOT metallic, it should have zero effect on detecting radar.
However, as many people will say, mounting your RD high lowers your chance of detecting laser, but not like that matters as a laser alert is just telling you to pick up your ticket (scatter is a different story). Lidar is extremely accurate (3ft spread @ 1000ft) and is much much harder to detect if near impossible if you're not within the spread to pick up scatter or stumble upon a miracle.
Many of the veterans will tell you that your only chance to avoid a lidar ticket is to get a laser jammer.

I keep my RD behind the blue tint to prevent people from seeing it from the front of the car, and lessen the visibility from behind the car (I have a dark blue tint).

My 2 cents from what I've read. Would like someone else to chime in.

As I understand it, the V1 picks up laser equally well high AND low.

And this being the V1 section...

Same with my readings, too - both here and also from the V1 website technical notes.

The "ceramic dots" are also reportedly "transparent" to radar reception - however, it's up for debate as to whether their pattern/proximity (each dot to the next) may cause some reduction in terms of laser sensitivity.

I pretty much share this member's views on laser detection as well. However, I also believe as JDS cites, that the superior laser sensitivity of the V1 can make it viable even as a high-mount.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here, not being an expert or anything, but I think it's not exactly the SENSITIVITY of the V1 on laser that allows it to detect laser mounted high...I think it's the sensor design.

Remember all that hubbub about radar field of view and off-axis reception that we've had on the board for the last few weeks? I think a similar situation with the V1 and laser. The fact that:
    (A) V1 picks up laser equally well regardless of mounting height, and
    (B) V1 picks up laser at point blank range, while other detectors cannot
...makes me suspect that the V1's laser receiver isn't JUST more sensitive (it may very well be, I don't know), but rather it has a wider field of view, so that it can "see" laser from a much more acute angle.

On the other hand, MAYBE the LIDAR guns have a wide, weak "edge" to the beam, and the V1 is more sensitive and is in fact picking this up. Dunno.

Well I have those little rubberized dots on my Mustang GT Vert (in the shape of a running pony) and since I am tired of the V1 suction cups not sucking, I mounted mine with velcro on the plastic panel trim that runs on top of the windshield with the V1 pointing right through the pony.
I have 2 speed signs that I tested with. One runs K and the other Ka. I noticed no discernable difference between that mount and mounting on the glass in the middle of the windshield. Both signs are around 's curves' with little straight road leading up to them so it's a good test.

    As for laser?
Who knows? Anyone have any data?
Like the others say, go pu your ticket 8)

^ I'm no expert, either. And yes, I believe you are correct - it's not the sensitivity so much as the design of the component. There was a rather illuminating thread that was posted some time ago that showed the laser sensor on the top-flight units, and the long-timers agreed that even by visual inspection alone, it's easy to imagine why the V1 was so good on laser.

I apologize for my rather imprecise language in my previous post - it's not "sensitivity" in the true sense of that word. ops: I was merely trying to say that the V1 is so sensitive to incoming laser that its placement (high-mid-low) seems to affect its performance less than its main competitors.

    Some interesting news:

First, puting packing tape on those dots doesn't do crap. I bought some high quality packing tape (scotch brand). It sticks to the dots fine but the suction cup can't create a seal on the tape at all. I think it is worse with packing tape. Any help guys???

Also, i tried testing ir light with a remote control when it was mounted very high (almost directly behind the tint strip). I didn't seem to notice any difference but then again the antenna might have been slightly exposed below. It consistently alerted to laser from about a foot or two away when directed at the laser antenna ( I believe on the right side of the V1).

This may not be real world but I think it simulates it somewhat? Anyone agree or disagree?

What kind of velcro should I use to attach it in that manner?

I appreciate the help but I would like something that is not quite as permanent such as velcro. That high end 3m velcro is starting to sound appealing. Where can I buy it at?
