Default power cord keeps blowing fuse and I ran out of fuses.

    Hey all,

I apologize in advance if this question has been answered before but I have searched and not found anything. I just got my V1, it was working fine for a couple days. It even worked this morning. I unplugged it for about 2 hours (ive unplugged it a few times since i've owned it). When I turned the car on, nothing happened, unit didn't turn on. Unit is powered by cig light cord, everything is plugged in. I figured it was the fuse on the powercord that blew (the 2 amp) and yes, it was that. I changed the fuse and as soon as I turned the car on, I saw a little glow on the replacement fuse. this one has blown as well. I went to like 7 different places, kragen (auto parts store), radioshack, hardware store and car audio shop and noone has these damn 2 amp fuses. I ordered a set online and they will come whenever. Has anyone ever experienced this before? I dont think its a problem with my cigg lighter bc my cell phone charger works. I was actually going to get the V1 hardwired tomorrow anyway....so it shouldn't be that big of a deal that the cigg lighter power cord is screwy, right?

Even so, I would like to have that cigg lighter cord working just in case.

Any help/insight/advice/comments would be much appreciated. I would like to enjoy this product.

    Thanks in advance.

Do any other things like cell phone chargers work in the cig plug? If they do....

I would try wiring using the hard wire kit. If everything is OK with that...

Send the cig plug you have in for a replacement, it is faulty. If the hard wire kit blows a fuse too, check the voltage in your car, but I doubt that is the problem as other things would be fried too.

does the power cord do this in any other cars? it would seem to me that if it does than yes, it's the power cord but if it doesn't than it's obviously your ciggy lighter. I've never had a fuse blown in any of my power cords, plus mine is hardwired. possibly something wrong with your electrical system in your car? i really don't know :?

    Default thanks

Hey guys, thanks for the quick responses.

My cell phone charger does indeed work. Also, the V1 was working fine for about 250 miles of driving over the past 2 days I have owned it. All of a sudden, the cord started blowing the fuses. I would like to think its not my car's electrical system going haywire. Everything else in the car seems to work fine, my deck, amp, subs, dome lights, etc.

The cord (since it has been malfunctioning) has not been tried in any other cars. It won't work though because I blew all the fuses I have (the 2 amp fuses...i tested them with a fuse tester, they don't work). I guess I will wait for the fuses to get shipped here and try it on other cars. In the meantime, I will try having it hardwired and see what that does.

Cheers guys. I'm not new to forums and I've had my share of people not caring about "noobs" problems. I'll update this tomorrow after class after I get the v1 hardwired

I agree with everything that the others here have suggested, try the cord (once your replacement fuses arrive) in another vehicle. See if the problem can't be isolated to the cord, first.

As a secondary test, if you've got another 12V accessory socket in your vehicle, you can give that a try, too, but the "other vehicle test" will be your primary.

A hard-wire should be a good way around this problem, however, be sure that you've got it on another circuit.

But, even after you've fixed everything and got everything working to your satisfactioni, you find that the cig. lighter was the issue, I'd have a look at the lighter socket and its immediate wiring (between the fuse-block and the socket), and figure what's wrong with IT, just to be sure you don't have some kind of short that's going to prove troublesome in the future.

You mentinoed that you have a continuity tester. Put a new fuse in your power cord, DON'T plug it in , disconect it from the V1, and measure continuity between the tip and one of the side contacts.

If you have continuity, your adapter/cord has a fault and will require replacement, or installation of hardwire kit.

On the other hand, if your cord did not indicate a fault, you should plug the power adapter/cord into the cigarette lighter WITHOUT the V1 connected to it (make sure you have power at the cigarette lighter before the test, as it sounded like yours is on with the accessory power) then remove cord and check fuse. If the fuse is OK, then it is a problem with the detector.

Just had the V1 hardwired at a audio shop. PM me if you want pictures of a cleanass install. It was the moment of truth, my heart was pounding, palms sweating and my wallet aching: i was about to turn the ignition key to see if the V1 powered up, which would indicate if it was the cord or the detector which was faulting. The result: it works! Caught a couple CHP buggers on the way home from my dorm as well. I got a couple replacement 2 AMP fuses from my install guy but I have yet to plug it into the cigg charger cord and see what's up. Right now I'm just happy that it works, haha. Next step is to run a wire for the remote display, I'm having a harder time trying to figure out how to conceal this wire because it needs to run into the middle of my gauge cluster.
