I just got back my former v3.789 (which was pretty much dead on X and K band) from VR. I bought the unit from Ebay and the seller was kind enough to take it and send it back to V1 for a tune-up and upgrade to v3.863. I finally received the unit yesterday and got the chance this afternoon to compare this unit with my v3.856.
Fortunately, on my way home, I ran into 2 CO K-band Novi PD LEOs (each time in a known K-band auto door opener area). The 3863 was mounted left of the RVM and the 3856 was mounted on the right, both level and at the same height (both behind tint strip).
First encounter, officer was shooting laser with his K-band still on (roughly a 90deg off axis encounter - right side of the road). There was another car just ahead of me in the next lane. They both alerted to LASER at the same time. A second later, I saw the police interceptor and then I get blasted again with laser (probably aiming at me this time). Once again, they both alerted at the same time. As I got near, the two detectors alerted within a half second of each other (3856 might have alerted first).
Arrows: The 3856 went from front, to side, to back flawlessly as I passed him. The 3863, however, went from front, to side, to front, and alternated between to the two for a good few seconds after I passed him before switching to the back arrows.
Bogey count: This area has 1 K-band Rite-Aid. The correct number thus in this situation should be 2. The 3856 saw the LEO first (gave a 1) and then as I passed, the bogey counter went up to 2 (front plus rear strong). A little while later, it did its normal ghosting thing and spiked up to 3-4. The 3863 showed a 1 consistently until right near the Rite-Aid and then spiked up to 2-3. Both are ghosting. However, what worries me is that the 3863 didn't register the Rite-Aid as an additional bogey until right near it.
Second K-band encounter:
Roughly the same thing, but this time, the cop turns out of the street and was driving a few cars behind me. The two both alerted at the same time. However, again, the 3863 had trouble with the arrows and transitioning. (Showed front and side and no rear when the LEO was obviously behind me). The 3856 was once again very accurate with the arrows. Also, passing a corporate building with a K-band door, the 3863 refused to see it as another bogey until AFTER I had passed it. The 3856 alerted to an additional bogey roughly 500 ft away from it.
Throughout both of these encounters, I also noticed that the ramp up on the 3863 was a little weaker than the 3856. Where the 3856 showed 4-5 LEDs, the 3863 would only show 3.
So, from this, could it be that my 3856 is just a factory freak? Or did they not replace a worn/failing component in the former 3789? Personally, from the fact that they both alerted at roughly the same time, I don't think that there is necessarily a sensitivity difference. The reluctant arrows and bogey counter almost seems like it's a software problem, rather than hardware.
Anyone have any theories or suggestions? Should I call V1 and have them retune?
