    Default V1 w/GPS

What do you guys think? Any chance Valentine Research will come up with a way to incorportate your V1 with a GPS navigation unit?

    No

And that is not necessarily a bad thing.

I think it would be a fun DIY project though... From what I can see from Prof Jim's work you can already get band, strength, direction alert info via serial port to a computer, so why not?

I doubt VR will go there. But third-party stuff is doable, such as the Cheetah GPS mirror.

I had some plans to add GPS capability to my V1 software, but I basically just wrote the software just to see if it could be done. Because it requires a Windows PC, it isn't all that practical for a vehicle except for a few carputer enthusiasts.

Someone could make a dedicated box for it, but to do it all embedded would take some work... maybe someone could do it easier with a tiny Win CE or Linux box...

Jim, not to put you on the spot, but would you be willing to release either the source code or point me towards the serial protocol for interfacing with the V1?

I just paired my RD's with a Tom Tom Go 920. I get all the features of a GPS system - correct street names, name unnamed streets not currently available from current map version, hands free bluetooth benefits, mark speedtraps with audio alerts which can be programmed at a desired distance and much more which you can't find from any other GPS unit other than the TT920. Incorporating GPS with a radar detector is surely a good idea but the capabilities will be limited.

    Why?

In a way its good to integrate things such as the Iphone eliminating the need for a separate ipod and phone.

However, the V1 does one thing and does it well. I don't see why it needs a GPS.

Hm. I agree partly...They should continue with their main business and continue to further improve V1. From my view there are only 3 Things that could be improved on V1:

    - improve Ka detection range, especially for the here used Multanovas...they alert very, very late

    - Maybe implementation of a open serial or USB Port or extend the functionality of the existing communication through power cord with a specified API to read and write specified parameters to give developers the chance to develop V1 Addons (maybe also a device to play with your GPS thing...or a nice GUI on a Windows mobile smartphone)

    - Maybe a Display to show the expected Radar type ("Multanova", "unknown" etc...) based on signature and frequency of the received signal. If the signatures list would be updateable, that would be a nice feature...
