For those of you who remember me, HI! For those who don't, also HI!
I've been a faithful disciple of the Escort 8500 X50 for a couple of years now. The old girl hasn't let me down once (aside from the terrifying "Self-cal" incident on I-15), but with all the new models hitting the market, it's time to upgrade.
And suddenly, the idiocy of the "upgrade" game hit me. I can buy the 9500i, sure, and get an admittedly great detector with lots of nifty features, but the 9500i is already a year old. Hell, Escort's probably got R&D going on the 10500 or whatnot, which would make the $450 9500i a moot point in two or three years.
Which leads me to the inevitable conclusion: V1. My questions, then, are pretty basic. In fact, I could probably find most of them through the search feature here, but I have to be at work in an hour and a half and I haven't showered yet (hooray OT+third shift premium! Remind me to cover the night shift guys more often). So here they are:
1. What type of mounting wire is included with the V1? Is it the Belscort phone cord (which has prevented me from mounting high for the past two years), or a direct, flat wire?
2. How bad is the "junk-out" problem? Seriously, this could be a make-or-break for me. My X50 saved my ass the other night when I was doing 83 in a 65, so the prospect of junking out a real, legitimate alert scares me. What bands are most affected by the J mess? If it's X, who cares? If it's K, that's a problem. If it's Ka, we're gonna have issues (I'm in SoCal, Ka country).
3. I don't know why I'm even asking this on a V1 forum. The results are going to be as predictable as asking a bunch of tree-hugging Prius drivers if the gas mileage is really that good, but I'll ask anyway: are the arrows really all that and a pile of dog poo?
4. For someone who's used to Expert Mode on the X50, how big will the learning curve be? Ease of programming is moderately important, but I'm ok with getting techy if necessary. What I'm more concerned about is how straightforward the interface is when you're doing 80+ in a 65 and multiple alerts come through. The X50 is a champion in this regard, imo, with its very clear marking of the band, the number of alerts, and the strength of each one. How does the V1 stack up, and equally important, do the arrows show the directions of multiple alerts, or do they only point to the strongest one?
Anyway, after typing all that, I probably could have done equally well for myself by simply searching the forum. Any help you guys can provide would be greatly accepted--I need lots of answers for the wife, who's already started the "but the one you have works just fine, right?" argument about this. If only I got to make the same statements about her damn shoes...
