Default Instant On - Hand Held Gun ?

I travel from Long Island NY to Upper West Chester for work 4 days a week. I know all the usual traps and the V1 is excellent for catching the off/odd places for regular Radar guys.

I have noticed that in one particular trap, just over the Throgs Neck Bridge and after the split for George Washington Bridge (so - going North on I95) there is a spot where the LEO sits, using the standard parked perpendicular to the road trap. Shooting with something to his head, looking through it, I always assumed it was a Laser Speed Measure device. However I have mostly been catching odd, what seems like Instant On KA bursts and NO Laser alerts...Now I realize, that I may not be the one targeted so I may not get the laser alert - but I do just find the whole thing odd...

I do know the V1 Laser Detector work - cuz I see it go off with nice Infiniti cars coming at me

Let me know your thoughts gang...

If he's holding it up to his eye and looking through it then it has to be a lidar unit. There is the possibility he has a Ka handheld unit sitting on the passenger seat and he left it on. There have been several reports of things like that happening.

Well, normally if the officer is "sighting" a speed measurement device it's laser. But, some handheld radar guns DO have "sights" that can be lined up for targeting purposes, even though this isn't all that necessary. So it *could* have been instant-on Ka, and the officer was just being a bit overly conscientous about his targeting, but this would be a bit odd though IMHO.

The Plano PD likes to leave their Ka C/O on enforcement days. Today every cop out has C/O Ka on. I got hit by 3 different units just going to work.

Sounds like laser to me. If the LEO has a steady hand and good aim, he can target you often without the V1 alerting at all. They usually aim for the front plate or headlight, down low, so a windshield mounted detector may not see the beam at all. Or it's possible he isn't targeting every car, just ones that "look" like they're speeding.

I've never seen a handheld radar gun with a sight scope. There's no need for one, except on lidar units.

Infinitis send out a wider beam and it isn't being aimed precisely, so V1s pick up on those easily, unfortunately.
If I'm passing you on the right, YOU are in the wrong lane!

If speed kills, how come I'm still alive?

Okay i'm so WAY WAY off topic, but you v1 guys will like this :P

while back the way i drove home from work everyday, they setup alot of radaring under a bridge in the middle of the road, they love the damn spot

one day though, i was racing with this big dumbass from work, hated the guy, but he wanted to race his saturn vs my impala ss(i miss that car ), so were racing up the hill and as we turn and head down the hill i start getting a ka with my v1, so i'm like crap, i move over and slow down, as i get a bit farther down the hill, i see the cop, he's not in the middle, actually on the same side of the road as me, on the shoulder, holding his lidar gun aiming at people

he forgot to turn his radar off :P, so i realize, and i look over and theres my dumbass coworker flying past me, we both pass the cop, and i thought i saw him walking back to his car, but i turned off like .1mile from where he was, so i'm like 'ha, he probably got pulled over'

went into work that night, he got a ticket for going like 90 in a 65 :P

anywyas sorry to hijack your thread, just remembered that story from the guy aboves post!

There have been numerous posts about this phenomenon. To me it's absolutely hilarious and I would love to get a video of it.

    What phenomenon ?

Because the story that Kayrac describes I see almost 3 out of the 4 days I drive to work. In Ny where I am at work, the road I-684 has known spots where you are just guarenteed to see cops sitting in the median. And like clockwork, I am driving, well above PSL, and I see the Ka alert, usually over a mile from where a known spot is. I drop out of the left lane - dump into the middle or right and watch everyone flow past me and then JAM the brakes when they get to the clearing and see the cop(s) sitting there....

Its amazing. You would think that when the cars got closer to ambush point, the rabbits infront jamming on brakes would give them a heads up... most of the time I see the people following doing the same thing.

Now - back to my original question....
I will pay better attention through this speed trap and get over to the right lane so I can see the cop better. Maybe one day if there is enough time I will get off and double back so that I can drive down the onramp right next to him so I can see the gun and signal strength.

Getting someone to race and then having your V1 go off... you stop. He runs straight into a ticket.

There IS a video of it, the one where the WRX and the BMW were racing and both got blasted with IO K, only out of sheer luck the lead car ran a rd light, straight into the hands of the cop.

    Classic idiocy
