    Default Finally Taking the Plunge

I've been lurking on the boards for several months and have posted a couple of times. After reading, and reading, and more reading, I decided to jump in and buy a Valentine. I literally just clicked the "Submit Order" button on the V1 website. I'm still trying to convince myself that spending $399 was a good idea.

I chose the V1 for it's laser detection. Our local deputies like the laser a lot. I work in a hospital ER and have had a few discussions with them on the topic. An order for Roy's license plate cover and some Veil will be next on the list. My car is a metallic silver Intrepid and probably glows in the dark if you're a laser gun.

A couple of questions come to mind. I live in Utah, which bans laser jamming. I'm sure the statute applies to Blinders/Lidatek/etc. But, what about Veil and the plate cover? I suppose a really enthusiastic prosecutor could call that jamming. Anyone in similar states have any experience in this regard?

I'm also planning a trip to Southern California in the fall. My wife and kids want to go to Disneyland (shudder), but I'm interested to see what the V1 sees in Los Angeles. I'm planning to watch my speed carefully because I don't know the area, so we'll see what happens.

True. I realize that it's a laser ticket notifier without those, but I've gotta start somewhere, and there's still plenty of radar out there.

Also, I think your brain might be thinking faster than your fingers can go.

Are front plates required in your state? If not, ditch it.

I think with all the passive countermeasures and excellent laser detection you should be as well off as you can be.

Good choice with the V1. I have an X50 and got a ticket with instant on Ka, the V1 may have saved be due to its better sensitvity. Have fun not being used for random tax collection.

Alas, Utah does require front plates. A lot of people drive without them, but I doubt that would be accepted as an excuse.

You could have called VR and got on the returned unit list for $359.
I don't run a front plate on my vehicles mostly because it is ugly, here in Ca about 50% don't have it and it takes an extremely bored LEO to give you a fix it ticket for this.
Not much laser here either. Still only two hits once in LA, once in Oregon.
CHP use Ka only. I have heard of some laser but have not seen it.
For Disneyland go around Nov/Dec Christmas theme, cooler, less crowds.
If you have AAA get your park hopper tickets with them as 10% off, free parking.
As far as looking for LEO's don't bother you won't find any action just go into the park. We might be there as well.

I thought about doing the returned list thing, but consciously decided against it. I realize that some people have legitimate reasons for returning items, but I don't like it when people "rent" or "test" items, knowing that they'll probably return them. This is why we get stuck with 15% restocking fees. I run a small business (not retail though) and I see the questionable things that people do. I realize that selling refurbs is a way for Valentine to recoup some money, but I'd rather just pony up the additional $40 and be done with it.

My comments are simply my opinion and not an attempt to instigate a flamewar. I realize others on the board may disagree and that's fine.

As for Disneyland, we're going in late October. I went once between Christmas and New Years, and it wasn't pretty. :?

Understandable, I was thinking the same thing when I purchased a returned unit in March however there was not a scratch on it, VR will replace both antenna covers in a heartbeat as they scratch easy. Who knows they might even switch out cases on returned units.
My 1.7 was serviced in March as well. I got new antenna covers and a new case top.
Everything including laser repair and second day air was free.

When you travel to SoCal, all you really have to worry is Ka band. NHP and CHP doesn't use K or X band. Even Utah HP uses Ka also.

When in LA and Orange county in SoCal, your rear view mirror will be your best defense. It's very rare for CHP to turn their radar on because of the volume of traffic there. Also, be aware that plate cover is illegal in CA. CHP will not pull you over just because of that, but if they pull you over for other reason CHP can add the fine for the plate cover.

Where in UT are you from. I go to Moab and St George frequently to mtn bike. IMO, Moab is one of the most heavily radar town from Arches to downtown with its stupid 25 mph speed limit

I live in Millard County, central Utah. I'm about 3 hours from St. George.
