    Default Unexplainable Save

I’m sure many of you saw my first post about finally getting the V1. So, I have it (3.864) mounted high on the windshield, above my RVM. I did lots of research (that’s how I found this forum) to make sure I mounted it correctly, program it properly, and become part of an awesome community of V1 Zombies.

So today on my daily commute to work, I hopped onto the bypass. Not many other cars on the road, and I broke the #1 rule of never speeding without a rabbit. I thought ‘I only have to go 2 exits up, I’ll be fine”. I’m cruising at 75 in a 55, left lane. Suddenly my V1 gets hit full blast and I’m on the brakes immediately. While braking HARD (headlights diving to the ground no doubt) I check the V1 and see I’m getting hit from the front, full strength KA band – and there is an LEO cruising in the opposite direction. It’s a 2 lane highway, with a small grassy median dividing both sides…so a total of 4 lanes, 2 traveling in each direction.

LEO traveling opposite direction brakes hard, swings right toward the shoulder. – he’s now stopped on right shoulder hitting me full blast from his rear as I travel away from him – I assumed he was just waiting on a car to pass before crossing the median and flagging me down for a ticket.

Instead, he just sat there, hitting me full blast from behind until I was out of sight. What happened here? Here are a few things I know for sure:
    1) He wasn’t using C/O Ka band
    2) When he saw me cruising well above PSL, he turned Ka radar ON
    3) I didn’t get a ticket

What are your thoughts on this? What happened? Did I brake so quickly that he couldn’t get a reading? Is this even possible? Could he have used POP to obtain an initial reading (which sent detector into a frenzy) and then hit me with ‘real’ Ka? What’s going on? I was expecting a ticket for sure. I’m a young guy with a red mustang GT and chrome cobra rims, and a blatantly visible RD mounted high (no tint on windows) – so he wasn’t cutting me any breaks because my vehicle was ‘responsible looking’.

the ticket gods were watching over you? and i guess they were in a good mood today. there's nothing like an experience like this to make sure you learn from your mistakes

Wow, your a lucky man. He probably did POP you at first and then tried again for a better reading, at least that's what I think could have happend, but I'm deffinatly no expert. I just picked up a v1 today and I will say that I like the unit a lot. I look foward to testing it out and seeing what it's really capable of.

Not trying to hijack his thread or anything, but has anyone seen a LEO cross a grassy median to catch someone? Usually they fly to the next turnaround and fly again up to your bumper.

The LEO might have been out of luck, with no turnabounds for a mile or two.

This also could have been a huge coincidence. Some LEO (in front of you, your direction) might have seen someone fly going the other direction and told the LEO (that you saw) to expect a flyer coming.

Can the LEO get a good reading if he is moving? I thought they need to be stationary to get an accurate reading of your speed?

    Default yes they can

Unfortunately i've had the pleasure of getting nailed by a New York state cop on Rt 90 in exactly that manner. I'm the only guy on the road at dusk, car coming towards me lights me up w/ IO K band (this was 6yrs ago) and drives right across the grass to get me. It was like Dukes of Hazzard in that he smoked the rear tires as he spun around to get me. When he came up to the car he basically said "I got you at 83 when your detector went off (I had pulled it down & hidden it), but I'm going to cut you a break and write it up for 74". He was actually pretty cool about the whole thing, but they can most certainly nail you going the opposite direction. Newer Ka units can apparently even pick out the fastest car, not just the first one. Beware.

Depending on the radar unit, yes they can. Some radar units have whats called "moving mode" which allows the LEO to get your speed while moving and not having to be stationary.

Oh yes, I saw a state highway patrol do it the other day. He was running C/O Ka.

(OT, but there are some where they display both the fastest and the strongest. Stalker something?)
