ok, so this thread can be for everyone to discuss how to make a HUD for V1. i know there have been some ideas discussed in another thread, however this will make it easier for people to find via searching (hahahaha like anyone knows about that function ) or for new members who want to do this.
so far, the easiest way i have thought of to do this, is to design it like a periscope. because i have an enormous dash with plenty of valleys/indentations, this will be easier for me. however, based off this idea, it is possible for any car.
for my car, i plan to hide the CD in a valley/crook with it being angled up at an angle. in front of the CD, there will be a small mirror angled towards the windshield. this will allow the image on the CD to be displayed on the windshield. (if necessary i will attempt to graphically explain)
now the problem is that i don't want cops or other people noticing something red glowing on my windshield from the outside of the car. another problem comes from the windshield itself. during night, i would think that the HUD would be nice and bright. however, during the day the image may be difficult to see because of the sun. in order to prevent this, i'm thinking about using some sort of shiny film on the interior of the windshield so that the HUD has something to project onto.
Idea A: Projection Screen
the material used as the projection screen poses another problem as well. it needs to be opaque on one side (the side facing outside) and reflective on the other side. i've thought about using a one way mirror film with the reflective side on the inside, however i believe the red glow would still be visible from the outside of the car. also, having a portion of your windshield blocked off by the film would be a problem. if it is reflective on the inside, it will prevent you from seeing out, unless it's a small enough area.
Idea B: Plastic for projection
another possible method is to use a small piece of plastic (piece of CD case perhaps?) on the inside on your windshield instead of a projection screen. staring at my flat panel TV, i realized that the exterior screen is quite reflective. i'm assuming the outer part is plastic. once again, the problem would be the visibility of the red glow from outside the car.
any ideas on how to prevent the visibility from outside the car? people with HUDs in their cars, it'd be great if you could chip in on how easy it is to see the glow of the HUD as a bystander.
for Idea A & B, in my car, i'd cover the CD laying on the dash somehow so it wouldn't be visible except for the display opening. either a cover for it, or some sort of casing for it that would have the mirror attached near the front of the opening. since i am artistically impaired, i'll try to describe it in more detail. imagine a box that would fit around the CD. it would cover most of it, except for the front. the bottom/floor of the case would be attached to the mirror and also be able to be extended. the ability to extend would allow the mirror to move closer and further from the front of the display. this in theory would allow the HUD to be more easily adjusted on the windshield.
Idea C: Concealed Display Projector
another idea instead of the periscope design would be a projector based system. my inspiration comes from an overhead machine. i need to reexamine one, but to the best of my knowledge, you place a transparency on it, which is then condensed by a lens (opposite of what a glasses/contact lens would do) to shine on the mirror (the angled part that is adjustable). from the mirror, it then gets blown up again by another lens (this time like a glasses/contact lens). the enlargement lens is focus adjustable.
now, instead of a transparency, you have the display of the CD shining up into the condenser lens (yes, if there is proper terminology, it fails me lol). the rest of the process would be the same. the head on a overhead machine isn't too large, and i believe that it could be shrunk for the purposes of a CD projector. in fact, i hope to prototype a projector unit that would fit into my middle rear seat headrest. that headrest faces the windshield, and a projector built into that would be perfect for projecting onto the windshield.
the CD projector could also be made to attach to the headliner of a car, like a projector in a meeting room.
ok, i think i am done brainstorming for this idea for now. i have thought about it quite extensively, but please point out any key points/areas i may have missed. since it's late, i'm sure i missed something. i will test Idea A & B tomorrow hopefully
