Default Ordering Monday... V1 or 9500ix or eww STi

    I really need some help...

I have always been a big Escort fan (7500, 8500, 8500x50) but have been tempted to try the dark side for some time now.

My question is (After looking a GOL and all of the other info/stats) Real world how does the V1 hold up...

    1) I'm in GA not VA... So spectra is meh...
    2) Liking the arrows... it may be 90's tech but they are the only ones...
    3) K and KA are big in my area...

Also, when does MV update and how often... as in if I wait a month or order Monday etc.

Just looking for some guidance and some strong opinions-

The whole GPS thing is up in the air with me... the whole locking/overlapping blocks are kind nuts IMHO.

Let me know and thanks in advance!

Also, which one is better at falsing? I have heard the V1 was bad but it was a previous build-out code.

This guy is asking the same question, so his thread may be helpful to you:

I'd say if GPS is no big deal to you, and you like the interactive experience of the arrows and bogey counter, go V1. The 9500 doesn't offer anything that the V1 doesn't. But offering less is what some people want. They don't want to be bothered by having to interpret arrows, etc...

Performance wise, you can't go wrong either way. That's the easy part. It's just about what kind of relationship you want with your detector. Hands off vs. interactive.

Thanks for the reply; I also just read your lengthy "helpful" post. Right now it's my wife and a kid on the way. I'm the kind of person that doesn't mind the warnings; However, she is first to hit the mute button. Does the V1 have auto-mute? Also, I will be doing mostly city/ tons of BACKROADS!!!

Got my dad hooked on Escort and he was like wtf? you want a V1... my 9500i is awesome! I was like yep lol. Also, coming from a 8500x50 will a notice a major detection increase going into a V1 from that specific model?

Thanks again for all of your help!

(I also don't mind being the techie! As I'm in IT)

I did however notice the tuning requirements; and it also true that the latest builds aren't as good as the ones previous to the POP or older? and Can you ask them to backdate their update on it?

Thanks again and I'm glad I found a OCD/technical forum.

Theres nothing wrong with the STi you're ewwing. It's one of the best detectors in my opinion. It's one of the most quietest detectors ever because of reduced falsing, and it is a plus if your wife hates noise because of the 2 tone ramp up.

I sold my V1 for an STi because my wife hated how noisy it was and how much falsing was going on. But now since I'm getting her her own car, I've bought another V1 to go along with my STi

<-- I have never been a BT fan... hence ewwing the STi- Just not impressed with the quality; or their over sized/include all unnecessary hardware packaging that makes you feel like you paying/receiving a comparable RD IMHO.

( I have yet to see any comparisons with a WORKING STi vs. V1 vs. 9500i or Xi.) from "GOL"

I'm thinking the V1 so far...

Yes there is an auto mute feature. It works pretty well, but could be better. I think there should have been an option for a permanent auto mute. Right now you can have it automuted up to 30 seconds, or you break a predetermined threshold (4 lights for me), and then you'll hear it at full volume, unless you have it in big L mode. Then, you won't hear the threats at all untill it passes 4 lights. I like to have all my threats presented to me, but I don't want to hear all of them. Anyhow, it works pretty well unless your at a light with a cvs across the street. I have a few other complaints about some features, but overall it's a kickass detector. That said, I'm sure a 9500ix is also badass. I wouldn't mind having one.

    Hi senfinger,

Beltronics was bought by Escort several years back. They are now one and the same company, and their engineers work together on their designs. That said, I have been using a Bel STi for over a year now. It is the windshield mount radar detector which I prefer to use on the open road. On the other hand, I love my 9500i for use around town since it is very quiet around town when used in Auto Sensitivity mode -- without having to use TrueLock! The new Escort 9500ix has completely different and vastly improved software for automatically locking out false alert locations. The 9500ix is totally trustworthy with regards to locking out K band false alerts yet still responding to true police K band radar.

I would NOT trade my STi for a V1 any day. My STi gives me as good of range as a V1 would here in GA. The V1, while an excellent open road radar detector, is rather noisy when used around town or in cities. Aside from that, the V1 is notable for falling out of tune and for mysteriously dying with regards to detecting radar on some radar bands. V1 owners generally send in their V1's for a tune-up once every year or two. On the other hand, Bel/Escort radar detectors automatically tune themselves upon power-up and periodically roughly every 10 minutes thereafter. Thus Bel/Escort radar detectors never fall out-of-tune unless something malfunctions within the electronics, causing either Self Calibration or Service Required error messages to be displayed. How is that for reliability? Bel/Escort radar detectors tell you when there is something seriously wrong whereas a V1 won't!

The V1 also has very serious "tunnel vision" with regards to detecting 35.5 Ka radar. See GOL's off-axis test about this. The V1's sensitivity to 35.5 is excellent straight-on, but if the signal is located off to either side then the V1's 35.5 Ka sensitivity horribly plummets! 35.5 Ka band radar by the way is the second most commonly encountered Ka radar frequency and is heavily used here in Georgia.

GOL tested fully working radar detectors, including a fully working STi, during their August 2007 radar detector shootout:

Guys of LIDAR - Radar Detector Test - August 2007

I then took the straight-line sensitivity test results and converted them into results specified in terms of dBm/cm^2 which is the standard method used within the microwave industry for specifying sensitivity:

Revisited: GOL Aug. Test RD Sensitivities To dBm...

Anyway, I live in GA too. More importantly, what are your driving conditions?

-- N. GA hilly and winding terrain, or mid and S. GA flatlands?
-- Is most of your driving in and around town, mostly highway, or roughly 50-50?
-- Will it be mostly just you in the car, or will you usually have other passengers in the car? This can help to determine, amongst Rds with similar performance, which one to pick that will be less annoying to family members or passengers.
-- Do you mind a lot of false alerts, would prefer that false alerts be fairly minimal, or would prefer to receive as few false alerts as possible?
-- Do you really need to know which direction any radar alerts are coming from (forward or behind), or will you just use common sense and slow down if you aren't sure where the alert is coming from? Its pretty obvious that if the alert strength is rising that the radar source is ahead of you.

Basically, there are a lot of questions to consider and to thoughtfully answer before you jump into ordering a particular radar detector model on Monday. All of the excellent to superb performing radar detectors will serve you quite well considering the southeast's terrain and driving conditions. Thus the rest of your decision process should be focused on the features which best suit your particular driving needs and personal preferences.
