Default 8.6 miles warning vs Ka. Is this for real?

Was out on a road trip (in the desert) got one bogey 2 led warning for about 5sec cresting a hill then all was quiet, saw 2 over passes on the horizon. Thought it safe to keep all ears open in case of I/O silent through both overpasses 2nd one being 8.1miles form my original alert, .5 miles later there is the CHP sitting on the side of the road chatting with the red mustang (no racing stripes for those following the rabbit thread) he stopped. (Almost wrote it off as a Cobra leak from oncoming traffic, but the V1 arrow stayed steady forward for my brief warning)

Later in the day picked up CHP c/o Ka with ~6mi (of my driving) alert he was EB and I was WB at the time.

I've long been used to not batting an eye for 3-5mi range on alerts but 8miles!

(I undersatand optimum conditions and a great deal of luck in timing was likely at foactor on a hot dry day over realatively flat ground)

Its amazing the range radar detectors get in flat desert with extremely low humidity. I didn't believe it until I saw it for myself when I went to SML outside of El Paso earlier this year.

On a flat desert surface, its been 'proven' @SML (whether or not its useful) that all the high-end detectors will pick up radar at 10Miles (or more).

Even low-end units can do this. So given the terrain, yes its possible, but ONLY because the terrain/environment... not so much the detector its-self.

I went to Boston via Buffalo and mostly the NY (90) ... i am amazed and very much satisfied with my V1 ... first thing that i noticed was NY-state trooper run C/O Ka and when i got a little more comfortable then i was mostly doing 90 Mph on 65.. i think i still have my GPS saying Max speed 106 Mph with max moving average 85 mph ...i did took the picture of the stats

My V1 gave me at least 5 to 10 mile warning ... if you have a LEO running CO Ka or K .. .trust me V1 will sniff it out from miles ...

Just be careful if you ever come to Michigan. Last week I got hit with I/O K band. The PO was in a new style black and white car with low profile lights. I didn't even see him until it was too late and if I had been speeding he would have got me.

I'm not sure if this fits with this topic but you can pick I/O K 3-4 miles away on a straight road. I got one 2 miles away before and it started out at 4 dots as I turned on it. Anyways, it's possible that you can pick up 8 miles on a serious straight road in humid weather and trees on both side with absolutely none in between.

How high do you mount your V1 to get that awesome range?

Don't get too comfortable. Although they often run c/o when they're just driving around, they run i/o on the same road when they're manning a speed trap. That's usually off axis too, and they're quite selective, so there's a BIG difference in detection range!
