    Default To upgrade or not to upgrade... to 3.825...

    My 14 month old pre-POP V1 appears to be developing the dreaded "out of tune" problem where it misses some K band bogeys. So far it's happened twice in the past month, one time on a known K band speed sign. During that time it's also detected many K bogeys, both real LEO and falses, so it doesn't seem to be really bad, yet. To be fair, it could have been the bogeys themselves that were out of tune, but 2 in one month has me a bit concerned.

    I've also seen more X band falsing, even though I'm in L mode. I wonder if an out of tune LO can cause this as well.

    Since I'll likely be sending my baby to VR for a checkup in the next couple weeks, I'm pondering whether to get the $75 POP/Euro upgrade while I'm at it. I've read mixed reviews of the 3.825 firmware. Some say it's great, some say it falses less, some say it's still buggy, some say the J feature works fine, some say it still junks out LEOs. So needless to say I'm :? :? :? Having access to a great forum like this has its benefits (tons of information) and its drawbacks (tons of information begetting even more questions).

    So, some questions to toss out to the V1 crowd:

    1. Is there any real benefit to upgrading a pre-POP (3.813) V1 to the latest and greatest, if POP isn't used in this area? Add to that that I sometimes drive in CT, NY and NJ which are rumored or confirmed to have or are getting MPH guns w/POP.

    2. Does POP lead to more falsing? I know I can turn POP off if necessary.

    3. What's the consensus on the J feature? Still too buggy, or does it work fine in 3.825?

    4. Any other things I should know about? I remember Sethy mentioning something about the bogey lock tones in L mode in 3.825 not always working.

    5. Some bugs/"undocumented features" I've seen in my V1 include a phantom Ka bogey during strong K or Ka encounters, and in some Ka encounters, two arrows lighting up for one bogey. Are these addressed in newer updates?

    6. If I order the upgrade, does VR do a "tune up" as part of the upgrade, or should I include a note with the unit outlining my concerns?

    7. Last but not least, I lost all my V1 accessories (lighter plug, cord, windshield mount) in a house fire. If I order the upgrade, do they send new accessories? I know they do if you send an older unit where they swap you a new one, but my V1 is newer. I'd like to replace the accessories while I'm at it.

    These are the things wrong in my current 3.825

    1.) J's oiut real KA threats (yes, the bug returns)
    2.) on L mode, it will not give a bogey tone when more then one K band source is found. on A mode, it will give the bogey tones on K band. This has been confirmed with JTW and happyass as well. (personally I like this bug)
    3.) phantom bogeys all the time. One cop will pass, it will show 2 or 3 on the bogey count (K band)

    If you want my honest opinion, I would say wait until VR fixes the J alert, and the phantom bogey.

    Sethy, on your phantom bogeys, are they both/all on K band? I get a Ka phantom when close to either a K or Ka source. In fact, that's what's cluing me in to a possible out of tune problem. I encountered a townie yesterday that I'm 99% sure was using K band, and all I got was the weak Ka phantom, no K alert at all. The same thing happened with a known K speed sign about a month ago.

    Has VR been made aware of these bugs? Any indications that they're working on them?

    Anyone else besides Sethy having the J issue on 3.825?

    So, if I can establish that my V1 has drifted out of tune, I should just get it fixed but not upgraded then? Does anyone know what VR charges for this since I've had my V1 more than a year, thus it's out of warranty?

    Mine has also drifted out of tune before, but they have told me they are working on a fix.

    my phantom bogeys have only been on K band.

    A fix for the tuning issue, or a fix for the 3.825 bugs (J etc.)?

    Are they aware of the bogey lock issue? The phantom issue? It's interesting that yours are on K and mine are on Ka. Do you get phantoms when you encounter Ka radar?

    If I wasn't (re)building a house right now, I'd just run out and buy another V1, and do a comparison between the 3.813 and the 3.825. That would get me a new set of accessories too.

    I also thought of buying a X50 from Roy, so I have another detector as a spare/to use in other cars, but that too is 300-odd bucks I can't swing right now. Maybe in a few months.

    kpatz: I have requested everyone who is still getting legit Ka sources "J'd" out to call V1 and voice our concern. When I talked to them they had no work order on the issue because they cant replicate it.

    I have 3.821 and I love this little guy except the "J" issue. I was thinking about sending mine in to get 3.825 but I'm just going to wait it out and continue to call once a week looking for update information.

    I would say your in a good place to get 3.825. If you have any doubts make sure you call V1 and let them know you think your unit could be having issues. They have super friendly customer service although they are shaddy with there issues and keep repeating the same thing over and over.

    I'd go for the upgrade if mine was getting that old

    If you drive in areas where they have POP, yes it would be worth it.

    POP has not led to any more falsing for me. If anything there is less falsing.

    The J feature has worked flawlessly for me.

    Can't think of anything.

    It is probably reflections of the same radar signal off of different objects. Probably not much you can do about that.

    Yes, they did for me, they fixed my X band. I would send a note explaining any current problems. The X band fix was done N/C as part of the upgrade.

    No accessories were sent back with my V1 after the upgrade.

    I haven't had the J alert to a real threat yet. I have wondered several times about some weak KA signals as I waited them to J out only to find a county or trooper around the bend.

    I think I'll go for the upgrade. Since I'd have to send my unit out, I might as well kill two birds with one stone.

    I'll wait until next week though, since we have a holiday weekend coming up and we know what the cops love to do during holiday weekends!

    I went out at lunch hoping to encounter a K-band wielding LEO but didn't come across any. Of course, when I want a speed trap there aren't any for miles. Maybe I should do 50 in the 30, that'll guarantee a trap will be around the next bend!
