I believe that a change in the hundredths (e.g., 3.86 to 3.87) indicates a PCB change (and presumably firmware to match that new board, if needed), while a change in the thousandths (e.g., 3.863 to 3.864, or 3.871 to 3.872) indicates a pure firmware tweak.

the shipment in june-aug has 3.864 and now 3.872, I don't think they fab-out the board and relay-out the components/circuit with-in 2 months, and complete testing with new f/w in the same time

The F/W version can be always change by S/W Eng, but not revision, so Eng can just tweak and any day can be 3.8XX, the major change was from 1.7 to 1.8, this possible relate hardward/cost reduction

They just want your money, that's all
No, that is incorrect. There are CONFIRMED revisions along the way that contain board changes. How are you coming up with this 2-month timeframe? It could be that VR has been working on the new revision for some time while they were shipping 3.864's. You just have a remarkably cynical view of VR here.
