Yes, We do use pick 'n place machines to place LED and other electronic components, no hand solder
However, from time to time we have to rework the PCA (printed circuit board), due to ECN (engineer change notice), we have to perform manual soldering by hand, since the boards was populated and can not put back into pick 'n place machine, which may disturb solder joint integrity of many other devices
There is soldering machine can handle size 0201 and even 010015, which is 4-5 time smaller than 1206 and so by saying this LED is 1206, should not be a problem at all ( that WHY I keep refer to Metcal)
Many these guys do not have
We produce over 1000 boards per days, and if the rework operator solder a couple LED/or any components that long, I will fire everyone in my company and do it myself
I am a PE/EE/QE, and dealing with this stuff everyday for the last 25 years, I am positive about this rework
If my client/customer require a quote to rework a fews components (4 or 6 LED), let's say they are same size of LED, and we say to Mr. customer, that take 20 minutes to solder these components, customer WILL response ... GO FU@K yourself, because they know too....
That's all I have for now

, because they know too....
