....mount the main unit?
IOW to *me* the remote display seems like a waste unless you are mounting the main unit permanently, say behind the grill or such and that would be a major problem in dealing with heat and the elements etc.
IOW how do you mount it out of site?
FWIW I have a Mustang vert and I wired up an RJ11 to the mirror light power and ground and used the 3M locking strips on the top of the detector and also on the plastic cowl behind the mirror.
This way I can remove the V1 even though you really can't see it anyway unless the top is down.
I would like to put the remote display up there, but where can I mount the main unit where it won't get destoryed by the elements etc.
One thing I can suggest to Valentine is to make the top of their next detector flat as it will allow using 3m or velcro strips more effectively.
Re: Where do you guys with the remote display........
For me, the remote display is a way to easier see the display, as well as not letting everyone behind me know I have it. When people see that you have a detector, many won't pass you or will mooch off the detector by tailing you. The remote display eliminates this unwanted attention.
Oh, I have it mounted high, above the rear view mirror. It is not visible at all unless you bend down and really look for it, but it still has a clear view out the back.

Re: Where do you guys with the remote display........
I have the main unit mounted up beneath my rvm. The remote is mounted between my tach and my speedo. Seems like a natural place for your eyes to go without taking your eyes off the road for too long.
Re: Where do you guys with the remote display........
Thanks guys but I was looking more toward making the install stealth.
IOW mounting the remote display either in the dash or above the mirror, where my current V1 mounts.
By leaving the V1 up above the mirror, I'm not accomplishing anything other than maybe easier viewing due to the remote being mounted in the dash.
Re: Where do you guys with the remote display........
My main unit is still mounted below the mirror, but without the lighting it is far less visable when functioning at night. Yes, viewing the remote without taking eyes off of road is possible & as far as I am concerned WELL worth the investment & the price of the LED modifications I had done.
Re: Where do you guys with the remote display........
My remote display is mounted on top of my steering column, with the remote audio control placed on the left side of the column, adjacent the turn signal stalk. The main benefit of placing the remote display in this location is that it makes it easier to monitor the display, since it only requires a quick glance toward the instrument pod to figure out what's going on--you can quickly check the V1 display and your speed at the same time. It's also good to place the display in a position where the telltale red lights are not obvious to LEOs who might take offense to your use of a radar detector.
Re: Where do you guys with the remote display........
I'm pretty much the same with everyone up there ^.
In my truck the V1 is mounted above RVM and the colored CD is mounted on the hood of my instrument cluster. Easy check of bogeys and speed. The color CD really helps out at night.
In my car the V1 is again mounted above RVM with the color CD in one of my air conditioning vents. I didn't have enough room anywhere else so it went there.
