V 1.8 w/o pop.
I am thinking about purchasing a V1.8 with out pop technology. Would this be a bad idea or it better spend the whole 400 and buy it direct? Also is there any sort of way to update the firmware yourself or do you have to pay 75.00 and have V1 do it?
Depends on a few things. As a detector it's a great unit and should serve you well as long as POP isn't used where you live. You would have to get it from a reliable source, though. And don't pay any more than $300 since an upgrade would cost you at least $75 plus shipping. But if you are getting it from Ebay then don't even bother. You never know where those things have been and whether or not they work.
If you buy it from ebay, use a credit card. If the unit fails to work, call your credit card company and have them credit your account. Ebay is very safe to trade on.

2) Always check the seller feedback and review it before buying anything. I've had a lot of success with eBay, but I've been taken once as well (counterfeit product). You can't be sure 100% of the time, but you need to do your homework. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
3) When you check the serial number do a quick search of the serial number in eBay to make sure it isn't reused off a different RDD. Note that it could be a relisting of the SAME RDD if you do see the number reused. If this is the case, make sure it is being sold by the winner of the previous auction.
4) The power cord and manual aren't that important if they're missing, but the cigarette adapter and the mounting bracket are. Make sure they're included in the sale.
I looked long and hard at buying a V1 on eBay. In the end, the potential for misused serial # and lack of a warranty wasn't worth the $100 or so savings. The internal circuitry are complicated and cannot be banged around. You need to assess whether it's worth the hassle if something goes wrong.
Is there a current updated list of states and/or currently using pop technology? I live near Providence, RI. I doubt their using it here however i could be wrong.
I don't know about RI, but it may be in use in CT and NY.
See here for bands used by state: http://www.radardetector.net/List-of...e-U.S-589t.php
Like brick said, CT and NY are the most likely threats around here. There's rumors of NJ adding Bee IIIs to their arsenal as well, so they could become a POP threat down the road as well. I don't know about RI though, but MA and NH don't have POP AFAIK.

I decided to buy a new one from V1.
DR, I think you made the right move. The newest units have somewhat higher sensitivity than the earlier ones. I have had 3 V1s. My current unit is 3.818.
Enjoy, it's a serious piece of hardware!
