I picked up DJ's V1 today at the post office. At first I thought that it was fried since it wouldn't alert to any X or K band microwave door openers. I then figured out that he had those two bands turned off. So I spent 20 minutes in a parking lot and finally recalled/figured out how to restore all settings to their factory defaults.
Anyway, it was too late in the afternoon to have some fun driving around with it and compare it to my 9500ci, but I will have plenty of opportunity over the next two weeks or so. I will also compare it to my STi once I figure out what metal shielding I need to install between the two of them in order to prevent the V1's LO signals from leaking into the STi's horn. If I can't shield the them from each other then I will have to test them independently.
After getting home I did a quick peek inside DJ's V1. Its built just as good as I thought that it would be. The North American made RDs produced by Bel/Escort, Whistler's high-end products, and Valentine really are in a class by themselves compared to all of the cheap import brands. Why anyone would consider buying any other RD aside from a Bel/Escort, a Whistler high-end product, or a Valentine is beyond me since the difference in internal build quality is obvious -- even in the FCC photos if you don't examine the internals of one of these RDs versus any cheap import RD yourself.
I immediately had some fun driving by a few microwave door opener false alerts while on the way home. The arrows seemed to work very well with DJ's V1 mounted high next to my RVM. And of course the V1's LED band indicators and LED bar graph display are like a trip back in time to the late 1980's when I used radar detectors with similar display features. A quick question for all you V1 owners. Does the V1 have any way of dimming its display?
