Default My V1 1.7 vs. 1.8 comparison is complete

Not scientific but me playing around.

Ordered a brand new V1 a few weeks ago with the latest xxxx25 software & put it up against my trusty 1.7 the last few weeks. The 1.7 went in for a tune up due to some laser falses but I now think it may have been my truck causing the falses due to low voltage and not the V1. My truck battery died a few days later so that could have been the problem the whole time causing the laser falses. Also noticed the “low voltage light” on my HR-12 when the battery was dying. Mounted them both on each side of the rear view mirror with no performance or interference issues noted.

Both units in big A mode mounted high on the wind shield above my rear view mirror on my 2001 Silverado truck, just below the blue top tint line.

X Band - The 1.7 is the clear winner here. I have not picked up an X band radar in a few years so I went by door openers. Seems like the 1.8 has been detuned on X band. No real issue here.

K Band - The 1.7 was the winner by a hair but very close to a tie on both real encounters & my HR-12 gun. A few times the 1.7 would beep a second or two before the 1.8. Not enough to matter at all. When testing in the truck with my HR-12 they both alarmed at the same exact time when the gun was triggered. An interesting note is when you aim the gun directly at either V1 at a few feet away it was about 1 second delay before they went into alarm at all. This was true with both the 1.7 & 1.8. Aim the gun away & they both alarmed instantly when the trigger is pulled. Conclusion, the 1.7 kicks butt on K just as good as anything else out there today. Makes you wonder if the slimmer case has a smaller antenna inside the 1.8 that accounted of the second or two delay on real radar encounters from a few miles out. Again, not enough to really matter. K POP never encountered & not tested.

Ka Band - Here is the big surprise. It was a dead tie on actual radar encounters. No clear winner. Sometimes the 1.7 would alarm a few seconds before the 1.8 & about 50% of the time the 1.8 would alarm a few seconds before the 1.7. I expected the 1.8 to whoop my old 1.7 but it did not happen. Got a LEO brother with a Ka radar in his patrol car but never had the chance to play with his radar against my V1. No real need to. Plenty of real Ka encounters to judge performance by. Ka POP never encountered & not tested.

Laser - No real encounters but the 1.8 sure had a lot of false alarms in bright sun light. Even more than my old school Blinder M10! I got about 10 in one day when driving to the sun while my 1.7 never alarmed a false laser at all. Also noticed the 1.7 will not alarm on my Bushnell range finder but the 1.8 alarmed every time, even with an off axis shot at the truck. Very impressive of the 1.8's ability to find laser from the Bushnell. Just wish it did not false alarm on laser so much. This is 50% of the deciding factor that will make me send the 1.8 back until the laser false alarm bugs are gone.

J Feature - The 1.8 only "J"ed a few times but the 1.7 never issued a Ka peep either time. My first impression is this is a useless feature. This is other 50% of the deciding factor that will make me send the 1.8 back until the"J" bugs are gone. After a while this would get old.

Likes- Love the slimmer case but you have to wonder if it slightly affects performance due to smaller antennas.

    I know I like my 1.7 better than the 1.8 I have.
My 1.7 falses less than the 1.8 I have and does a better job at all around detection.
The only thing I like about my 1.8 is the smaller size.

I owned one of each a few yrs ago and ran them together from Houston to Ft Worth...they gave identical readings on real hits. The 1.7 falsed a LITTLE more than the 1.8...

    I wouldn't think twice about using a 1.7...

That's interesting. My 1.7 falsed laser more often than my 1.8 does. But then, when I had my 1.7, the dreaded neon brakelight on Envoys and Trailblazers were a lot more common than they are now (newer ones don't use that brakelight). I also had sun falses with the 1.7, moreso than the 1.8.

But the 1.8 is more sensitive to laser (e.g. it detects LA Stealth Mode), so that might explain your experiences with both falses and your Bushnell.

J Feature - The 1.8 only "J"ed a few times but the 1.7 never issued a Ka peep either time. My first impression is this is a useless feature. This is other 50% of the deciding factor that will make me send the 1.8 back until the"J" bugs are gone. After a while this would get old.
The 1.7 didn't detect POP, so it would filter out brief Ka alerts until it "knew" they were legitimate. This could explain some of the detection differences with Ka as well. The 1.8 with POP, has to alert immediately, even before it can determine if it is a false or not, in order to alert you to POP in a timely fashion. Thus the need for the "J" feature.

As for the slimmer case, the 1.7 had a separate board and sensor array for laser on the bottom. The 1.8 integrates the laser circuits into the case better. It might have made the front antenna slightly narrower, to fit the front laser lens.

Thanks Won. I think I'll stick with my 1.7 for now anyway, even though it's an old 1.7 it still does very well with detection on all the radar bands (excluding POP of course).

can someone post side by side pics of a v1 1.7 and 1.8 (whoever has both not 2 seperate pics)??

just wondering how much slimmer the 1.8 actually is in comparison

    Default 1.8

There is a huge difference between the 1.8 3.825 and the last versions regarding KA sensitivity.
I'm reffering mainly to Multanova 6f (I don't know how many met this fix-cam) but only the 3.825 gives you a fair chance with it.
There is a price to pay in false alrams I agree.

Its not that much slimer at all! Take the bottom edge off where the front laser dot is and thats about it

I have the 1.8, non pop version and it falses less than the 1.7 that I had, plus overall detection range is better. I think the 1.8 pop models suffer on range detection as that had to be blunted somewhat to control falsing.
