I had been having my doubts about K band sensititivity. I kept telling myself all the anticdotal evidence was explainable. I finnally conducted a definative test with an actual K band radar unit. The V-1 did not pick it up at point blank range. The whole thing is strange, because there is a K band speed monitor that the V-1 alerted to on my way to work. I pass this sign on my daily commute. On all days the sign would register my speed, the V-1 would alert some days with anemic range and, other days it would not alert at all. There are also two K band supermarket door openers the V-1 would alert to but, only within about 300 ft. Most LEO radar in my area is KA band. There is one agency that uses K band, however, and, I recently observed a hand held being used at close proximity to my V-1. I'm sure it was transmitting. I saw the speeds being displayed. The V-1 was silent. That's what prompted me to get access to an actual K band radar to test my V-1.
Flash forward; I just got my V-1 back after requesting a check up and POP upgrade. WOW, My V-1 has been malfunctioning for YEARS! I had always scratched my head when I passed the local K-band using agency and NEVER recieved a signal. I know, the officer might not have been transmitting but, never? I was usually picking up that speed sign and the two supermarkets though, so I just keept discounting it. Yesterday, my first day with the upgraded V-1, I was overwhelmed with signals. Many, many signals all along my commute in both X and K band that I had NEVER received before. I had always used my V-1in the A mode too. I passed that local agency with a K band unit mounted in the car. It was on constantly, and I picked it up about two miles away. The police car was off axis by the way! I borrowed my buddy's K band gun and retested. I received an instant and strong alert.
I feel like an idiot, driving around all this time with no real K band protection. How did this happen? What kind of malfunction caused this? Valentine research did not indicate anything on the invoice.
I've also noticed KA band sensitivity is way up. There is another KA band speed sign on my commute which I picked up a full 1000 ft sooner than before the fix/upgrade. The only problem I have now is the laser falses. Before the upgrade they were very rare. I had five on the way home last night. Had me hitting the brakes hard a couple of times. Was this increased sensitivity designed to make the V-1 more likely to pick up Lidar beam scatter?
