Default 3.818 completely missing K speed sign?

Completely happy with my V1, owned it nearly a year now, nothing even remotely resembling a close call in that time, blah blah blah.

I'm running 3.818 with the following settings - features b-G enabled (5-second delay, unmute at 4), as well as Ku detection on. Ku was more for kicks, as I've seen nothing set it off aside from GPRS handheld radios. Mounted top-center of my windshield, behind a non-metallic tint strip, with a concealed display in the gauge cluster.

A month or so ago, my brother finally hopped on the V1 bus with a new model of his own, version 3.825 I believe (factory settings all around). I haven't noticed any change in type/amount of alerts on my unit, I regularly get Ka warnings and the occasional K (usually muted and false). However, my brother made a comment about a speed limit sign down the street from where we both work. He would get a full alert when turning on to the street, while I got absolutely nothing. The closest I've come was a weak single rear alert on my way home from work.

Installation difference? Tint issue? Sure I thought, I'll just drive down the street and sit in front of the sign. Nothing happened. I approached the sign from all directions, snail's pace, windows down, and not a single alert. The sign was definitely on, flagrantly flashing my speed the whole time.

My initial thought is that it could be related to Ku detection, since that's the only major difference in our setups. I've turned it off now, and will find out if this helps once I go to work Friday. I'm really baffled though - I've picked up all sorts of X K and even Ka speed signs, this one must be using some wonky wavelength or something.

    Any ideas out there?

Your V1's LO could be drifting out of tune. If it's slightly off, it can miss some K bogeys but still pick up others.

If you send it into Valentine, they will generally fix this free of charge. The same thing happened with my V1 after a year and they didn't charge me for the fix.
If I'm passing you on the right, YOU are in the wrong lane!

If speed kills, how come I'm still alive?

well since the newest v1 claims to be euro enabled with the ku band maybe they also updated the types of radar the speed limit signs have....just to be on top of everything. i dont know for fact just speculating

Either the gun or your V1 may be out of tune.

Considering my brother's picks it up fine, it's leaning toward the V1

This is what Mike Valentine wrote about the V1 not alerting to a speed sign

"The failure to alert to a particular speed sign might have one of
    several causes:

    1) The speed sign may employ an FM-CW modulation technique to sense the direction of vehicles in its field of view. This feature is used to
isolate departing from oncoming traffic. The V1 does not recognize
FM-CW modulation as a valid police radar signal and tries to reject it.
FM-CW is allowed for license-free "Part 15" devices by the FCC. FM-CW
is not allowed for police radar. There are numerous traffic-volume sensors using FM-CW spread all around metropolitan areas these days that detector owners would rather not produce an alert. Otherwise freeway driving (in Cincinnati, at least) would be very annoying. It's a good thing that the V1 rejects FM-CW modulated signals.

    2) The speed sign may have drifted out of the police radar band from
aging or temperature. "Part 15" devices are somewhat notorious for this
behavior. Automatic door sensors and Doppler security sensors are both
"Part 15" devices, too. Few automatic door sensors use FM-CW because of
the added expense. The speed sign devices can afford the added cost of
    including the FM-CW modulating hardware.

    3) The V1 in question may need for our service department to have a
look at it to make sure it is operating correctly."

delete, I get the exact same thing in my town with my 3.818 detector...it doesn't detect the K band speed sign 'til you're right next to it. OTOH, the X50 picks it up 1/2+ mile away.

I suspect the unit is old and may have drifted off frequency...just a guess.

I can tell you this with much certainty: Actual LEO detection of K band (only band used in my town) is amazing...it's almost too good. I can pick them up while they're operating on parallel streets.

    Take care.

Yeah, and thankfully there has never been an issue with true alerts, range has always been exceptional.
