    Default DIY Modded Concealed Display

I'm not trying to take away from the folks here that offer services.
And depending on what's involved I may use them, but I like tinkering.

Is there info of doing the mod yourself?

Namely what part # for the different LEDs. I realize there was a little trial and error getting the brightness you wanted.

Also I assume the Arrows are colored from the red plastic, has anyone ever tried to change these. Is it one piece of plastic for 3 arrows. If it's colored LEDs for those it would be great.

I'd like to make the sideways arrow green and the rear yellow.

I was going to ask the same thing...

I was also wondering if anybody had any ideas how to make the original display smaller.

My idea was to cut off the mute button from the board and remove the jack and attach the cable to it. Now I would have a super thin compact board but no housing. Any thoughts on where I could find a proper housing for it?

I'll be working on a similar DIY project soon, and this stuff would be nice to know. LEDs, etc.

Search, it has all been posted. Everything that is red is actually red. The arrows are one peice of red plastic, and all the band/strength has a red film on it that must be removed.

Hey I did a search for the LEDs earlier and came up with this:

    http://www.radardetector.net/forums/...d-mod-diy.html

But I still haven't found any DIY's that talk about building a slimmer enclosure or hacking up the CD unit and making smaller... any leads in that direction?

    A Dremel is your friend.

Depending on where you plan on installing the slimmer display, you may not need to enclose it at all. I have mine in the spot where the "credit card drawer" was in my Audi and I didn't make an enclosure for it at all, as it's flush with the panel.

I have seen people remove the mute button to make the display narrower so I'm guessing this is pretty easy to do. I haven't looked at mine to determine this though.

Around the same time I made that DIY I also described how to detach the RJ-11 plug so that it moved freely. Do a search for POSTS STARTED BY ME. This will be a good exercise in the search function. You guys would do far better to use it than to re-ask questions. People get sick of answering the same things over and over...and may just not answer.

Problem is RED, LED, MOD, DIY and a bazillion other search terms are not searchable because it's 3 chars or less. If there is a defacto thread on mods I think it should be in the Stickie archive.

I did do searching and checked archive. All I found was members offering their service to do the mod.

I started a different thread but might as well delete that one since this can be dealt with in just this thread.

This is pretty much exactly what I want to do but don't know where to get the plastic, clear red front, etc... Anybody know what kind of plastic this is?

I'm not sure how you missed it MSW, but in my previous post I said search for stuff STARTED BY ME. You do this by going up to search and selecting "Advanced Search" from the dropdown. On the right side there is a place to enter a user name (robcollins5) and then a dropdown for either Posts by User or Threads Started by User. Choosing the latter, I found the following among the 2 page list:

    http://www.radardetector.net/forums/...elocation.html
    http://www.radardetector.net/forums/...l-gremlin.html
    http://www.radardetector.net/forums/...d-mod-diy.html
    http://www.radardetector.net/forums/...h-install.html
    http://www.radardetector.net/forums/...play-fail.html

There is some helpful DIY stuff, some what not to do stuff, and some idea inspiring stuff. I encourage you to read each thread in its entirety to find answers to any questions you have now or may develop as a result of reading. Any questions, specific or general, not answered in the thread should be placed INSIDE the thread in question so that others may benefit from the answers. I'm pretty good about follow-up, though a PM reminder doesn't hurt sometimes.
