Default Intersting save last night in Ohio...

    Hi all,

Was driving across Ohio (flat and straight) last night and had an interesting (for me enounter). I was in a small pack of cars driving around 15 over PSL. Pretty mellow, not a lot of traffic, but enough cars on the road to keep things interesting. I was in the back of the pack letting the others blaze the trail. In the middle of nowhere I get a weak X alert. Ohio still uses X, so I take notice but continue on. About a mile later I get a slightly stronger alert (two lights) and its consistent so I back down to +5 over PSL. a half mile after that it starts to ramp - 3... 4..... I back down to PSL thinking "some goofball is actually gunning X band out here in the dark in the middle of nowhere...". Sure enough, a little over a half mile later it really starts to ramp - its real, so I start looking around. I catch him in the median out of the corner of my eye, X is chirping full strength and then WHAM... full tilt Laser alert! I'm pretty sure he got the car two in front of me, but he had slowed as well by that point.

Question: is it common for the police to "pace" with radar and then lock you up with laser? This was a first for me. I'm not complaining; I enjoyed the extra warning. If anything, it pushed me close to installing a Blinder system.

I also got a nice Ka save near Wheeling (big hills and curves). Picked it my first tone maybe a mile out in an area that drops from 65 to 55 and its easy to go over. Noticed that the truck drivers were slowing and figured... OK... maybe they know something I don't. Picked up a few more tones for maybe .5 miles (had slowed to PSL by that point) and then it really started to ramp and I shortly saw the trooper coming around a corner in the opposite direction. Actually, my buddy saw him, as he was kind of getting into the game at that point

So, a good night for the V1. Would have definitely been at least a candidate for the X/Laser (???) attack in BFE Ohio, and may very well have been targeted in WV as well.

Lessons learned/utilized: Pay attention to ALL your surroundings. NOT just your detector. There are other cues you can use to help figure out what might be going on. Truck drivers are good bell weathers, especially at night. They're trying to make time on open roads late at night - if they slow, there's usually a reason.

Cheers, and any info on the X/Laser thing would be helpful!

I had this happen on my trip home from Ohio on Sunday. I was literally in the middle of no where, corn fields for miles, when I see something orange sticking up about 1/2 mile down the road.

Some local cops had setup a speed trap w/ laser and they where using this huge orange flag to wave cars down. Little did they know that by pointing it straight in the air I could see it forever. So I slowed down because something just wasn't right.

It looked to me like they where doing field training for a rook.

Sometimes a LEO will forget to turn their dashmount radar off in the cruiser, and it'll be blaring away, notifying RD users of the approaching trap, where the LEO sits outside the cruiser (not noticing the radar being on) shooting laser.

But X band gets the cake, since a decent detector can pick it up from miles away.

If speed kills, how come I'm still alive?

I thought about that, but you wouldn't think they'd be that careless. Obviously it happens I just thought there might be a technique that I wasn't aware of. Like I said, I'll take the extra warning every time.

Well, there could be a technique involved. For example, they could be radaring traffic in one direction and lasering in the other. Or, they could be using the radar to clock traffic and then they target potential offenders with the laser to pinpoint their speeds.

But in most cases it seems like the LEO is outside the cruiser and inside, the radar is blaring away to nobody.

It could even be done on purpose, to slow down RD users, so he can more easily pick out offenders that are still speeding.

I came across this the other day when I did a search of x-band to see if there are any new issues related to police using it.

    See:docstoc.com/docs/2358943/A-Comparison-and-Analysis-of-KA-Band-Radar-Vs-X-Band-Radar

This is a document that summarizes a study done for the New Jersey State Police. Near the end of the document there is a discussion about the accuracy of using a combination of x-band radar and laser. Maybe this is what you encountered. Sorry for the funny formatting, but I don't have enough posts to use a link.

A save is a save no matter how you get it. Even X band.

I have had this happen, Picked up Ka from about 1/2 mile away. I cruise up going the PSL and spot the cop. A second that I get a full fledged Laser hit, luckily I got that Ka way before. I was thinking he was getting the opposite traffic as well?
