Default Driving with the V1 - 8 Months Later.

Been a few months since I've checked the forums here regularly with school and holidays keeping me busy and all, so I popped back on and figured I'd make up a little post about me and the V1.

I purchased it in April of 2009 on the recommendations and stories I read on this forum, some first hand experiences...and of course those awesome ads they put in the various car magazines I like to page through.

Once delivered, I immediately hardwired it into the radio fuse and bent up some 22 gauge steel from home depot to make use as a mounting bracket in conjunction with the provided visor mount. http://www.radardetector.net/forums/...1-install.html

Naturally my first time making the 4 hour trip home from school it was silent nearly the entire time, short of when I got into town and drove past the automatic doors and what not. I'll admit it was a bit unnerving at first driving with it, I kept glancing at every once and a while wondering when it was gonna bark at me...

Of course prior to even hooking it up I had all the information I needed to familiarize myself with the differences between various Bands of radar, I/O, C/O and Lidar, falses, etc. thanks to everyone here on the forums. I feel that that information is extremely important and I think everyone else will agree with me.

Anyway...when I'm home I do the majority of my driving in the North Jersey area and encounter my fair share of various different LEO's (Local, County, College/University and State). All of which have their own little nuances that I've come fairly privy to over the years. Though, to and from school its Rt. 80 pretty much the whole time out into PA, all the while worrying about NJSP and PASP.

My V1 experiences driving in PA have been numbered, though stick out the most in my mind compared to in NJ. Of the handful of instances my V1 has gone off its been I/O K-Band, on the highway...waaaaaay in front of me. Of those instances, the LEO was fairly well hidden, and I almost certainly would've gotten a ticket. Probably would've pulled me over for doing 80ish in a 65, then seen the NJ plates and given me the ticket. So, even though I haven't had many instances of my V1 going off in PA...the times it has gone of its been invaluable.

As far as in New Jersey, its almost always C/O Ka-Band, with a LEO on the side of the road around a bend or over the crest of a hill. MOST of the time, I'll pick up the signal with ample time to slow down. There have been some Oh S**t moments on the highway where it was almost too late to slow down. However, in those instances it was merely because I wasn't being nearly as attentive at the time as I usually am. I will admit that a properly hidden LEO with C/O Ka can be quite problematic (interesting word choice, I know ) but many times there's too many cars in front of me for him to single me out.

I have seen X and K in NJ. X is usually on the highway, and K usually around town on the open town roads (not near automatic doors). All of these instances I had plenty of warning.

Since I've started driving with my V1 its become quite clear to me that many speed traps are almost trivial now. I've wondered if the LEO's know how easy it is for their traps to be defeated. I get a kick slowing down to the PSL and driving past a LEO I picked up 1/2 a mile ago. One thing I started doing a lot more is trying to alert other drivers of upcoming traps and I've found it a bit annoying that the majority of drivers I encounter do not do the same to me, though, its most likely just the inconsiderate people on the roads in NJ too busy on their cell phones.

In the end, eight months later, I am astounded at the V1's performance and will continue to support and recommend it to anyone who asks. Just figured I would share my experiences here. Please feel free to comment, flame, or ask any questions.

Where did you spot X band? Last time i saw X being used was by a Bergen County Sheriff or RT. 4 near the Garden State Plaza mall. Other than that its mostly Ka, K and Laser on the highway.

Ryan, very nice summary/review. I'm confident you'll benefit from having the V1 riding shotgun for years to come

Rt. 80 on my way out to school, NJSP sitting in the middle of the highway.

You know it is nice to see some good things said about the V1. Here lately there has been some V1 bashing going on. V1 ZOMBIES: You need to start flooding the forum again.

Well, I saw my V1 doing some amazing locating on my drive to work this morning. The arrows are priceless when it comes to pinning down the location of LEOs in heavy traffic No other detector can accomplish that.

The V1 is a genuine tool where the other detectors have become more toy-like with all the silly add-on features, voices, and whatever crap they can tack on to tell people it's all "new" Personally, I'll stick with the simplicity. Thank you!
