I'd send it in to V1 first for a check up. Only 45 dollars.

Otherwise maybe the previous owner turned certain things off...

Oh wow, the 3.813 version of the V1 is considered one of the best versions available. Whatever you do, don't upgade it.

When I bought my 813 from a friend, it was completely dead on K band. This may be the same case with yours. Send it in to VR and ask for a $45 tune up.

It was one of the last versions before POP came out. Some users swear it's the best version. I have one and it's only slightly better than my 3.864 (which has POP).

As a noob, it's best to experience all the V-1 tells you, for at least a couple weeks, before you start tinkering with the internals.
I recommend logic-mode (little L) so you get all alerts, but low-level X-band signals will be reported at the muted volume(set by the volume Lever). Experiment.
After a period of familiarity, should you want to configure the internals, like K-band muting, you can print out a copy of my handy reference sheet (the red links in my sig) and keep one in your car.

i thought its best to run it in A mode? or A mode means ALL alerts are audible and little L mode all visual and audio except the X band correct?

my Escort catches a lot of k band around town, the V1 seems to not catch those same k bands, would this indicate it being weaker and needing a tune up? or would it make it smarter than a 9500ix?

This would indicate that your V1 needs to be sent in for a tune up. It should false more than your Escort.
