Brick's Frankenstein Heavy-Duty Windshield Bracket
Well, the belscort bracket thread got me thinking (be very afraid :shock: ) so I did some searching and found clear heavy-duty suction cups at Lowes. It took me a while to get the geometry right but I've found that you can do the same thing for a V1 really easily. Here's a picture of my own frankenstein mount:
No doubt this would look like ass in the middle of a windshield. It's not so bad behind a tint strip, though. The detector hangs down well below the suction cup which actually lets me hang it a little lower than I could before.
I found the large suction cup hook in Lowe's close to the "fashion bath" section (thought not exactly in it) for $1.98 Part of the hook was cut off with a fine-toothed modeling saw as shown. A ~1 1/4" machine screw was driven through the pre-existing hole in the V1 winshield bracket and then through groove in the plastic hook. It holds fairly well that way, which allowed me to take it out to the car and adjust the angle of the scew so that the detector sits level. Some clear 5-minute epoxy finished the job, permanently fastening the screw to the hook.
This suction cup is incredibly strong. My girlfriend laughed at me for a solid 5 minutes when I got it stuck to the kitchen table and couldn't get it off. I have about 4 hours of driving to do on Sunday which should be a good trial.
Go ahead, laugh all you want! If this keeps my detector from falling off the windshield every morning then I'll be a happy V1 owner.
