Default Upgraded to 3.826, getting ridiculous # of strong K falses

Is anyone else experiencing this? I upgraded from a ~'97 1.7 which faithfully detected every Wal-mart in the vicinity, but now have a unit which spontaneously alerts on K (high signal strength alerts, frequently giving a lock tone) with no apparent K source. The alerts all have the same characteristics in common: sudden frontal alert at high signal strength (no brap-brap leading up to a stronger alert, it's initially alerting at multiple LEDs, often a lock tone) followed by a rapid loss of "signal" within 2-3 seconds. The arrows do not switch to the rear, so I doubt I'm passing legitimate K sources. I'm in the SF Bay area, and am not aware of any agencies that actually use K -- it's all Ka. I know about the solar operated drones on 280, but that's not what I'm hitting. So far I've experienced the bursts on 87, 101, 280, and 17 (for those familiar with the area). It's so annoying that I've had to disable K detection entirely since it's constantly going off. Did I just get a dog which needs to be sent back or is this a software issue that won't be fixed with a replacement? I've got a 2000 mile drive coming up next month so I really need to have reliable K detection. Current config: X and K bands disabled due to falses. Detector received Monday and is definitely 3.826. TIA.

What makes you think that they are not drones, because you are describing them very accurately?
    Maybe your 1.7 was malfunctioning?
You have 30 days to get your 1.7 back but my guess is that it fell out of calibration.

The part that bugs me about this description is that the signal doesn't ramp up. The only time my V1 doesn't ramp up is when I'm hit with an instant blast. Every other alert, be it real or false, will start off weak and build to its maximum. If it's just starting off at, say, four dots and then stopping and it's doing it all that often, then there might be a problem.

There are a couple of things you can do. The first is to just sit in some "clean" (no falses) location and see if it does it all on its own. If the same thing happens when you aren't moving then something is obviously wrong. Something else you can do, and I got this advice from a V1 tech, is to see if the signal is directional. You say that they are all ahead, but what happens if the detector is turned backwards? If the alert responds to this change, i.e. the rear arrow lighs up, then the signal is definitely outside the detector somewhere. If the front arrow still lights up then send it back to VR. You might want to try having a passenger hold it and watch the arrows for you during a short drive.

The third option, of course, is to call VR and talk to to a tech. They have heard just about everything and might have a good idea of what's going on. I called in with a falsing problem and they told me exactly what I needed to know to figure it out.

This is exactly how these drones operate sporadic different level blasts up to an instant on full tone at close range then disappears.
Rear shots happen as well as they are mounted on both sides of the freeway for each direction.
That is why I use the described automuting codes to silence all eight LED's instead of turning off K band as CHP do not use K band.

I had the same problem with my BEL....The source of my problem was my Bushnell radar gun in my back seat had low batteries and would turn on and off every 5 minutes or so

I have to believe that those drones are going to start pissing people off enough in the future that they will start to get vandalized. Are there any wires running vertically that can be cut from ground level? In my neck of the woods - Virginia/West Virginia/North Carolina a shotgun blast would fix 'em. After repairing them 5 times each I think they'd call it quits.

Of course if these things are in urban areas the above probably isn't an option. Just curious.

Constant-on drones are obnoxious enough, but drones imitating instant-on? That should be illegal.

After all, they are basically radar detector jammers, and it's illegal for us to jam radar per FCC rules. Drones should be illegal too. I think they once were.

They are probibly powered from the street light, so if the street light goes off so will the drone!

very annoying problem people have here by the sounds of it!!!

There is a radar false on Interstate 40 in North Carolina (Raleigh area) that I pass almost every day to/from work. I have to think it is a drone because its not like a signal from an automatic door where it increases slightly then decreses in intesity as you pass it. This thing randomly emits a blast of K at 24.176, and then stops. It normally registers anywhere from level 3-7 on my Vector 985, depending on how close I am to it.

I've timed it, and it seems to be on an alternate 30 second / 60 second interval. One blast, wait wait wait, another blast, and then I'm out of range.

I still haven't found the device that is doing it, but there are a couple suspicious things on poles nearby. Anyway, this thing sounds like what was mentioned above.

For any locals that are interested, location is between the Harrison Ave. and Airport Blvd. exits. You'll pick it up Eastbound as well as Westbound on I-40.
