My V1 arrived last night by UPS. Poor guy was still running his route at 9:30.
It was well packaged and complete, including a nice manual. It seems to have all the necessities to do most basic intalls. This is my first V1 and I really like the look of this unit over the many Belscorts I have, and had over the years. A little more hardcore utilitarian than the foo-foo RDs Im used to.
I took it for out for some "get aquainted" time at work today. I do a lot of driving so I got a pretty good feel for it over the day. I ran it in the "A" all mode which is is pretty sensitive and alerted me to several door openers. While most people refer to these as falses, they are still RADAR signal, and the unit is designed to alert you to its presence. Well, it does exactly that. It alerts you to every signal that is strong enough to be considered a threat. You decide from the arrows if its really a potential threat. The V1 also "J"unked a couple of these out, AFTER alerting me it was there. I dont really find it annoying. I just check my speedometer then disregard the warning unless Im more than 10 over, or if the threat is front or rear.
Although I didnt encounter any LIDAR today, I did come across a few K bands rolling in traffic. I love the simplicity of the volume/mute control. I was able to identify the bogey and its location pretty quickly, thanks to the arrows, and mute to a low volume reminder until I was clear of the signal.
On one occasion I came over an overpass in town and just before the crest my V1 started pegging in K and counted 5 bogeys ahead. I thought, OK, I just experienced a real problem with the V1. This thing is freaking out on a door opener or something. Coming down the overpass there was an accident at an intersection. There were 2 motorcycle cops with speed guns working the wreck. As I passed the cops my arrows indicated the threat to the side, then behind. The forward arrow was lit also. I figured the V1 was also reading door openers at the same intersection, but there was still a forward arrow as I put the intersection behind me. A half mile straight ahead I came up on a speed sign. Bam! There it was. The arrows didnt lie. Had this been one of my Belscorts, I would have dismissed the continued alert as signal from the intersection behind me. The V1 arrows alerted me that there was still another valid threat ahead of me. Hey, it really works!
After just one day, I was impressed with the V1. Its not perfect since there are door openers that operate on the same RADAR signal as well as speed guns. Thats the problem with all RDs. I think I would rather have an RD that lets me determine if the threat is real or not, rather than have it decide on its on, whether or not to tell me the threat is there.
The biggest impression I got from my first use is, "How in the phuck did I ever get along without these arrows?"
The bogey counter and arrows are indespensible. I found this out my first day using the V1.
