Default Is POP being used by the NC State Patrol?

I just got back from a test drive of my newly aquired used V1 (non POP). I was at a stop light and got a strong Ka signal as a LEO pulled up from the other direction. But as I drove down the high highway I past a rolling marked State patrol on the other side and nothing, so I figured he didn't have it on. Then a quarter mile further on the other side an unmarked State Patrol had just gotten a customer pulled over and I didn't get a peep. That has me a little curious now. Any ideas? Would he turn it off as soon as he pulled someone over??

No, I don't believe NC state patrol uses any POP capable units. NC does use LIDAR (Laser) which won't set off your V1 and if it does go off on laser, it is too late. NC uses a mixed bag of radar really as I've heard reports of some state patrol units still shooting X band! Mostly encounter Ka though if they are using radar, but they also do use LIDAR so depending on where you are located you might want to look into investing in a laser jammer.

He was using I/O most likely. NCSHP uses all bands of radar in I/O mode as well. Ka, K, and X. Hopefully you don't live in NC because they treat speeding like you just murdered someone.

Selective I/O or laser. Was the LEO parked facing with the flow of traffic or 90 degrees to the flow. If 90 it was in all probability laser. Your V1 is no defense against laser!!

Yes I live in Durham and know about the speeding crap in NC. The LEO was facing me. I got a big hit from him on Ka . The two State Patrols (one with a customer) was facing me as well on the other side of the highway and I got nothing from them.

Because once he has the violator's speed, he doesn't need to broadcast radar anymore. That is standard practice. It's not very common for an officer to still have his radar running if he has just pulled someone over for speeding.

More than likely I/O or Laser, although add into the mix VASCAR. That is predominately used now from Charlotte down I-85 to at least Kings Mountain, per NCHP from a TV interview. I talked to one HP in Asheboro that at one point noted they were using VASCAR in moving mode for on-coming traffic on the interstates, but that was a number of years ago. They definitely use it all here.

As an aside, a couple weeks back I was up at the Charlotte Douglas airport on Wilkinson Blvd and a maroon Malibu was running Ka and a marked CMPD was running an MPH X gun in the center turn lane in a small valley, both using only I/O.

The X I caught a long way off, the Ka I did catch over the hill.
