The cops hang at this location on a regular basis and use mostly use laser, but this time one was shooting Constant On - KA 33.8 out of the rear window, off to the right side of the road. It's a local 4 lane with a grassy median and limited access for about 2 miles before you get to the cop's location, almost like a freeway, and it's easy to find yourself doing 60+ mph, but the PSL is only 45mph.
You come over an S shaped bridge, then up a gradual rise in the road. You can't see the cop's location until you're coming down the other side of the little hill, and even if you know where to look it can still be hard to spot them due to some overhanging tree branches.
The Sti-R alerted at .8 miles, while I was still on the bridge, just as the bridge started to straighten out. The V1 alerted at .5 miles. I was 3 to 4 seconds from the top of the little hill when the V1 alerted. I was only doing 45-50 mph since I knew the cops would be there (having passed by in the opposite direction a few minutes before). If I had been doing 60mph-65mph like some folks, it would have been very close with the V1.
I have the V1 mounted up high, wired into the power cord on the rearview mirror. I wasn't surprised that the Sti-R alerted first, it usually does, but since I was approaching the rise in the road I expected the V1 to be pretty close to the Sti-R. This was one of the few times it wasn't really in the ballpark. The road doesn't square up to where the cops sit until you get over the rise in the hill and the cop was still at about a 20 degree angle to the right when the Sti-R alerted, so that may account for the difference.
I still love the V1, but the Sti-R can be pretty amazing, especially in over the hill type situations.
Incidentally, I came back by the next afternoon. There were three cop cars at the location, with one cop standing outside his car shooting laser. I was in a group of 4 cars, nobody really speeding (all locals who knew the area I think). The Blinder went off at the same time as the Valentine when the cop shot me. I switched off the Blinder after 3 to 4 seconds, and the V1 kept alerting for about 3 more seconds, then went silent for a couple of seconds, then alerted again as he shot someone else. Nice performance by the V1 (as usual) on laser.
