Default Tweaking the main unit's display?

Does anyone perform display modifications on the detector itself? I ask 'cause I don't need, or want, the remote panel, but would very much like different LED colors...and probably other stuff, if it's neat.

I know, I know, this is inherently dangerous, opening up a fully-functional V1, but it's long past being under warranty, so it's past time for modifications. :P

    Thanks!

I've been watching this fourm a while, though not closely for a while. I'm a long-time Mike Valentine fan, back to the original Escort, Passport and mini-Escort. FWIW, the original Escort could survive boiling water dumped on it while plugged in... Old Dodge vans had the engine between the front seats, hence the radiator access was inside...it's a long story.

it may be worth (thats if you or no one else will do it) checking if valentine will modify the display for you.....

hense you pay for parts and labour or if you can supply parts they just charge labour, like as if the l.e.d's have blown etc....

Cool, man, thanks. I'll ask and hope not only that he'll do it but that it won't cost a fortune, and if I ever send my unit in for updating, it's a 3.619, VR won't freak out.

That's the problem, I don't think lifespeed will do a main unit because of the possibility VR won't work on a unit that has been tampered with.

    UPDATE FROM VALENTINE

I have received an email from pete kaufman and i'm affraid they dont replace the led's, but he said there are many people doing it.....

he didnt mension they work work on them, just that it voids the warranty if its being opened..

i think the only time they wont work on one is if its serial number is missing...

if its out of gurantee and your soldering skills are good then you could give it a go, and even if someting bad goes wrong at least you can get valentine to put things right...

    Dude, THANKS for the follow-up.

My soldering skills...well...I've managed to burn myself with a pistol-grip iron, so I'll let you draw your own conclusions.

I like the idea of, even if I fubar it, I can get it fixed. Cool, a company willing to cover your back if you do something boneheaded. What a nice surprise!

What's wrong with audio alert. Different colours would cheapen the V1's high end look. If you note Uniden's have the colour's going on maybe you should go and get on of them. Im telling ya V1 will not even look at your detector if you try this to many thing's can go wrong the moment you hit that baby with a iron. So think about it they are not gonna put there name behind your unit for a upgarde when you may of unknowly damaged it with your led upgrade. Also why have VR used the red led for so long. They upgarded the qaulity of the led's sometime ago but still kept them Red.
When people email you and say "I think" etc that really mean's i hope or i don't know or even you try and let the rest of us know. Lifespeed's not trying to sell this one Yet cause he knows he cant back up a unit that's gone faulty on him and sure as hell V1 will not want to deal with the 50,000 people who get it wrong. One last thing what do VR charge per hour for fixing people cock up's
P.s Would you open your sony handy cam up for a play. Man just put some coloured see though plastic over the I.D light's go nut's.

Sometimes I want it down lower so as to not wake my passenger. That, and even with the volume up, I like a visual cue in addition to the audio.

That's a valid opinion...but just that, one owner's opinion. I think it depends on the user.

Um, dude, you're losing me here. A *Uniden*?! Get real...I want to make something which kicks ass better, not have a pretty POS.

I have had a HandyCam open, though it already had issues. It's rather crowded in those machines, FWIW. Oh, and colored plastic covers ain't gonna do jack as you're starting with red LED's, not white or another light color. Additionally, you automatically make them dimmer as the light must pass through another layer of 'stuff'. I guess you could find a reference sheet to make the red a different color, but I've never seen a chart for it, and you aren't getting a red LED to be yellow, at least not a bright yellow...just not gonna happen.

It must be early in NZ.
