I had to put a bunch of miles in PA today w/ my V1 1.8 (3.872).
Operated in half-L mode with Ka Guard OFF.
My route covered the turnpike from the Ohio border, to Johnstown, then back 22 - west, to the turnpike again. Finally back to ohio.
Heres what I noticed:
V1 range against
(where range is distance from first alert to the position of the radar antenna):
1. Speed signs (antenna facing me as i am coming)
K speed signs / construction signs: .5 miles
Ka speed signs / construction signs: .33 miles
Comments: I know these are just speed signs, but Im surprised the V1 doesnt pick them up sooner....Are these things really low powered? Or is the V1 filtering out these somehow.
2. *Pennsylvania state patrol car, backed in against an overpass, shooting the rear of passing cars I/O with his patrol cars 'K' band radar (antenna facing away from me as I am coming).
Range: .5 miles
I consider this a common PA state police tactic.
*Note I consider the V1's performance here pretty good, because his beam was facing away from me. There was a hill in front of him which may have been providing me with some bounceback help.
3. Pennsylvania state patrol car parked sideways, on 22, using a handheld K-band radar gun I/O aimed out the side window at me as I am approaching (antenna facing towards me). Other traffic present. It looked like a Kustom Signals Talon radar gun.
Range: .33 miles. Not very good.
Signal ramp up started as one or two on strength and then immediately solid, max strength.
I was not speeding. If I were quick on the brakes, I could have saved myself if I was. However, if I was thinking Id get more warning - Id get a ticket.
I was going to turn back around and investigate this kind of handheld radar again, but the cop nailed the car right behind me.
I also looked for ENRADD tripods setup, but didnt find any.
Does anyone know anything about these low-powered K band handhelds? What are they called? What mW power output? What kind of range (ie. when I get only a dot or two on the signal meter, is that enough for him to get my reading? )
