Does this seem right or should I have got more warning? Im not sure is this considered constant on or instant on?

V1 was in 'A' mode with POP ON and Ka Guard OFF.

It was .33 miles from when I got my first alert, to when the sheriff unit and I met (he was coming towards me on the opposite side of the highway).

.33 miles, assuming both of us were closing at the same speed...means
there was .66 miles in between us when my detector first alerted...

This happened in ohio, I-70W, just east of zanesville, with a county sheriff unit.

It seems, in the past, that I would get more k-band alert.....usually about 1.0 mile from when id get the first k alert to when Id pass the oncoming unit. That would mean i was first alerted to his radar when we were 2.0 miles away from each other - assuming we were both closing at the same speed.


Also note the semi I pass that triggers a Ka alert. Probably had an illegal RD. Hope he doesnt drive thru VA ! ha ha

Im assuming this is 'instant-on' because:

1. I didnt get much warning
2. I couldnt pick him up after he passed me (he must have shut it down right as he passed me).


He probably lit up that truck (the one that I later set off a Ka band alert).... and I caught the splash...

what do you all think?

To the OP,

Looks like C/O K band from the sheriff with a right curve in the highway, a tanker truck blocking some of the beam and summertime foliage blocking part of the beam. It is anybody’s guess how the LEO has the radar antenna aimed in his cruiser. I’ve seen some almost aimed at the hood of the patrol cruiser so as not to give as much of a signal for RD’s to pick up. Each situation is different.

Since you had Ka Guard off the rear Ka signal may have been the tanker truck, another vehicle with a leaky detector or a Leo coming up you backside.

I have mostly K band in my area with a little Ka every now and then from the CMPD HITS unit…. they usually stay at the other end of town. So for that reason I keep Ka Guard on to determine if it is a J out / leaky detector or a LEO.

Like you dizwiz I got a Ka hit in the rear earlier today but mine was a NCHP LEO. I was coming from the airport this afternoon back home and NCHP had their usual Kustom Pro III laser setup on the Tyvola Road Bridge shooting I-77 South traffic in the back with what I counted as 9 chase cars & trucks. They were just nailing them, like fish in a barrel. I headed down the ramp onto I-77 South, go about ¾ mile past a hard right bend in the interstate and get Ka from the rear, one of the Leo’s left his radar on and came flying past me and pulled a 4 wheeler. I always assume a Ka is a LEO unless I get a J out.

As I went onto I-485 past Johnston Road there was another NCHP on the inner loop ramp using either laser or VASCAR, no radar signal. As I go by him on the outer loop he lights them up and heads down the ramp for a customer. It must be getting toward the end of the month.

Yeah, the Ka hit in that video was definitely the tanker truck. After that video ends, I actually slowed down and let it catch up to me. Again, I got an alert.

NC has been nasty lately. Wife and I traveled down I-77 to florida in march 09.

We were blown away by the amount of radar units on the road. It was a friday when we drove down. When we made the return trip, on a saturday, there were hardly any radar units on the road.

I can only guess law enforcement/ police unions make sure the majority of their cops work 'gravy' shifts down there because they can. Its my understanding law enforcement is pretty corrupt in the carolinas.

They needed the enforcement on the weekend for spring break traffic headed north, because people were driving terrible thru there. Its one thing to speed, but its another to cut off everybody you can when it goes down to one lane road merge for construction. I had a minivan pass me on the grass median to cut me off on I-77 when it went down to one lane for a construction zone... (not NC license plates, but I believe this guy had a MI license plate).

yeah cops are going to be out in all the major attraction areas like beaches, lakes, party places, etc because summer is coming to and end and everyone is trying to get some last partying of the season done.

I think the curve and truck blocked most of the signal, as soon as you started around the curve it lit up like a Christmas tree.

I'll be heading to Myrtle Beach in about an hour or so, hopefully i will have some good video to post up later this weekend.

Have all the necessities for a high speed run, a fast car, 2 high end radar detectors, laser transponders, bail money, a lawyer on call and a Federal judges phone number!!! Wish me luck!

Hope you had a good trip down to the Bikini. Know the route well, been doing it since 1977, have relatives / friends down in Jacksonville, Orlando and Tampa.

Can’t say for the ethics of the LEO’s here, I usually don’t hear of anyone getting a break. The NC SBI crime lab is being torn apart right now with those cats not reporting evidence that could have helped the Defense against their charges, about 200 cases, similar to the FBI awhile back.

I think category 4 had it right though, about most of the beam being blocked. Looking forward to his videos headed to Myrtle Beach.

I would guess it was the truck that you passed. Many times I have pulled into a truck stop and got a couple Ka hits from the trucks. Not sure what emits them. But i have come across rigs giving off Ka band but not to say that it was a Leo just my guess.

Your settings are reversed. It should be POP off and Ka guard ON
