Welcome to illogical "L" modes. They can be customized so they mean different things depending how you customize it. "A" mode is for full sensitivity and the "L" modes vary audible alerting and visual alerting.

My extensive process on my programming is in my sig. But ill let a true V1 zombie answer better for you.

Just like cj said it really depends on what you want. For instance, If you do not like k band falsing and it begins to annoy you, you can program the v1 accordingly. With my v1 when I'm in big l if I pick up a k band it's completely silent until 30 seconds passes. Then it alerts at full volume. If I use it in little l it wi report the l band at muted volume for 30 seconds then do full. It depends on what you would like. I would advise you to go to valentine ones website and take a look at the programming guide. Also by default big l alienates Alot of the x band. Little l reports x band at muted volume. You have many options to choose from when dealing with the k band. You can have it mute signals until 4 or 6 dot signal strength. You can also control for HOW long you'd like the v1 to mute if you don't reach the designated strength (ie. You get stuck at a light). The maximum time made available is 30 seconds. If you have any other questions feel free to let me know.
