    Default Brand X funnies

I notice that a highly-touted new model from another manufacturer has, silkscreened across the top of it, the words "MAGNESIUM CONSTRUCTION". Very nice, but the V1 has had that all along. (As did the V1's true ancestor, the original Escort.)

This new unit costs about $50 more than the V1 - though it does come with a pretty chrome carrying case, an external speaker, and a remote display power cord. I really don't have a need of that nice case or a remote speaker, but I thought that at least the remote display seemed worthwhile... until I looked at it and saw that it reduces the visual information to lighting an LED when radar is detected -a far cry from the V1's remote display which duplicates everything - including the bogey counter, arrows, band indicator and signal strength LED's. Can those using the other brand's remote display do without the main unit's cool frequency readout? I guess it must not be that important after all. And forget about band indicators or even signal strength, there's only the one LED. Welcome to the 1975 Fuzzbuster...!

I saw mention on the other mfr's site of a 'trade-in program' and I wondered if maybe another company was finally going to do something along the lines of what Valentine does with its upgrade program, but the other brand's "program" is just a limited-time offer where you send them any old detector and they give you $80 off their new model. Nice to get the discount, but it's not a 'program', it's a promo.

The wheels have just come right off the old argument that the V1 is too expensive, now that you can spend half a hundred more than the V1 costs for a unit that includes a bunch of stuff that some people may not want or need - and still is not a V1 by any stretch of the imagination. Even with a far superior remote display, the V1 costs less. As for the remote speaker and the nice case, they're fine if you need them, but I just don't. I think these extras amount to 'selling the sizzle instead of the steak'.

I don't mean to rip the other product - if I wanted to do that I'd mention the specific model. I'm just pointing out how V1 crushes the others, like a grape.

I am just wondering how much of the total price of the other model the hard carrying case and the other accessories factor in.

The other manufacturers are TRYING to catch VR. So putting it in a fancy box etc. is not going to make me want it. See if you put a monkey in a suit it's still just a monkey in a suit.

I think the "new" detector will make or break Belscort. At least they are TRYING and even if it does beat the V1 in KA detection by a MERE 2-3 seconds it aint got the ARROWS. We do not know as I write this if this unit is superior to the V1 in the KA domain. Time will tell....I mean GOL will tell!

    hoosier:

    SPECTRE PROOFING!!!!!!!!

And the promise of greater radar and potentially laser sensitivity.

Note that the "MAGNESIUM CONSTRUCTION" is written in Gill Sans, a typeface designed in the 1930's by Eric Gill for English Railways and now used by Saab in their print material for the past 20 years or so

You can put lipstick on a pig but that doesnt make the pig attractive. I am talking about farm animals here not radar detectors.

I will admit, 2-3 seconds at highway speed IS impressive, but IMO the arrows MORE than make up for it.

2-3 seconds at highway speed means it could be 10-15% more sensitive, if not more. And we haven't got the laser results yet, which I'm sure is going to be a big improvement ove rthe X50/RX65 since it has 4 laser LEDs now instead of 1 forwards. I'm sure there is a way to calculate if you are going 100Kmph and it gives 3 seconds more warning, how much more sensitive it is (maybe someone else can chime in).

Nope. Radar detectors et al are not illegal in most places for passenger cars so this isn't a concern for me. If Spectre does become an issue, guess which company is bound to offer an upgrade to Spectre-proof any of their existing units at a reasonable cost?

Hint: the name starts with "Valentine One". And even now it's less detectable by Spectre than most of the other units.

Now - is Belscort gonna offer to upgrade anyone's 8500 or SOLO to be "Spectre proof"? Nope, and there goes $300 ($339 with blue display) on the obsolete pile, along with dozens of their prior so-called 'worlds bests' and 'test winning' models. For one thing, those stylish, half-used-bar-of-soap plastic housings likely can't be made to trap radiation hence none of those plastic-housed units is going to have a chance on Earth of being upgradeable to be Spectre proof. Now Belscort KNOWS that their current plastic-housed models may be about to become obsolete yet they will still be glad to sell you one at full price.

Valentine doesn't do that to their customers - but right before your very eyes, you're watching Belscort shaft their loyal buyers. If I'd bought an 8500 or other of their products in the past 29 days it would be in the express mail back for a refund in time for day 30. Let THEM eat their model which is about to become obsolete.

Valentine - and only Valentine - has never shafted their customers. You seem to have forgotten THAT little detail!
