    Default V1 Users in Houston

I live in Cinco and mostly drive within the Greater Houston built up areas on surface streets and freeways, with only occasional drives out of Houston. I currently run an old Escort 8500 that I've owned since around 2002. It's given great service but it's getting more falses recently and so it's time for a change.

My question is to you existing V1 users in Houston, the V1 is undoubtedly a great detector but I'd like to know how chatty it is in Houston (freeways and surface streets). For those that have experienced multiple detectors in Houston, I'd welcome any comparisons to the; 8500, 9500ix and Redline.

    Thanks for you help.

Turn X band off. It's not used in TX, and it will drive you absolutely crazy in Houston.

K band is a little chatty especially around the big box stores, so run it in "little L" mode and you should be ok. I have my "little L" mode set to mute for 15 secs or for 4 lights. That is usually enough to cover the falses so it's not driving you totally bonkers. However, I wouldn't go too far over the limit. 15 second/4 light muting will possibly decrease your warning time for REAL radar, but should still give you ample time to make adjustment as long as you're not doing 90+ and you're paying attention.

I usually switch to "little L" mode when I hit Humble and that's usually where it stays when I'm in town...

I have not used the other detectors you mentioned, so I cannot make a comparison for you.

I know that area quite well. The V1 will do quite well in the Fort Bend County area. I would turn X band OFF and POP OFF. Keep K band ON. There are quite a bit of stealth cars in the Fort Bend County area so hit me up with a PM if you'd like some pics of those.

Chatty on the surface streets. And it gets more chatty the deeper you go into Houston. But, on the freeway, it is pretty docile. Usually, on the surface streets on Houston, I'll get a ton of falses at locations where I can't speed anyways (too much traffic).

I dunno guys... I've seen X-band used... this was on I-10 at 610 from a Spring Branch ISD patrol car

But to answer the original question... I much prefer the 8500 over the V1 in town... the auto-mute feature on the escort alone is a sanity-saver with all the falsing... the V1 only has full alert, and mute (Where the mute volume is adjustable)... the escort as 3 levels - full alert, auto-mute (which is simply a lower volume after a few sec), and then you can press to silence it for total mute...

I have a V1-1.8 and a Redline that I run together. The Redline's main drawback in City that bugs the heck out of me is when your next to false K and you press the mute button it will automatically go off of mute a few seconds later and be SUPER loud. Very annoying! I actually unplug it now when I am in a store parking lot because of the auto unmute. The V1 doesn't do that, but the Redline beats my V1 on Ka performance hands down. To give you an example when Houston cops sit along the Highway and use Ka I always pick it up on the Redline before the V1 by a lot.
The V1 is very configurable in programing mode though and you can change things you don't like. I have set mine not to alert to extra bogeys in mute. (Which can be an issue sometimes with a new Ka radar in the area, it doesn't alert you to it)

V1 is very noisy around town. I've got X off but it still chimes in if the signal is strong enough. DJrams runs a 9500ci with his V1 and turned the K band off the V1 to help quiet it down. Here's a 12 mile run from downtown out to Sugarland so you can see how often it alerts.

It's very chatty. Doesn't bother me but YMMV.

Wow nice to know! I keep my X on on my V1 and off on the Redline.
