    Default V1 POP alerts?

You know, all this time I have thought I have yet to have a false POP, when I learn that the J function is actually a sign of a false pop alert... I have gotten at least 10 of these. I thought the J functionw as to weed out ratty radar detectors that spewed KA, not POP.

I have a V1 with Pop1, and I'd like to know what kinda alert is given when KA pop is detected!
I've looked thru the menu and I don't have the J, obviously  .So if I get hit by Pop will it only be a momentary KA and 1 on the bogey counter?

    Cheers

I heard from V1 that a POP alert will sound like an instant-on radar encounter when it happens. The new POP2 will give you a "J" if it is a junk detector.

Right, and for whatever reason, V1 uses the "J" symbol to mean two different things.
If you enable option "6" in the settings, this will alert with a "J" for junk detector.
If you enable option "J" in the setings, this turns PoP on or off.

I have heard the same thing, but no one can really confirm this...

The V1 does not specifically alert to with a unique POP alert.

Standard K or Ka tones here.

As far as i know, there is no real way for any detector to distinguish between a pop and an instant on. So my guess is the escort and bel units simply tag any KA band pluse of a given duration/strength as POP... even though it may be plain old instant on.

If it is labeled Pop or not any strong instant on KA band alert should be taken very seriously.

I liked having the J come up when I got a false from another detector, because it allowed me to stop being paranoid.

...67ms is pretty brief. So much so, unless POP circuitry is specically built -in and impletement well, detectors won't even "see"/"hear" it.

Therefore, I should think that a well-built POP circuit should be able to differentiate from a weak standard K/Ka burts lasting much longer than .067 seconds.

It could be that detectors don't have enough "resolution" to differentiate between instant Ka and POP. If a detector keeps on sweeping for more signals after it picks one up then it wouldn't be able to time the duration of the burst to see if it's 67ms or not. Instead all it can really do is to say "ok, I saw it during that sweep, so let's see if it's there during the next one." Without designated oscillators on each channel (which would probably make a detector huge) I think it has to be a matter of guessing and erring on the side of caution.

True, you could program any (67ms) brief KA burst to alert as POP... however, you may be catching the tail end of a regular instant on burst. Say you are coming around a corner and just catch some reflected signal at the tail end of the burst. The 67ms of a legitimate POP vs the 67ms of the tail end of an Instant on burtst are indistinguishable... so you can display POP and have all sortf of sirens go off, but as to determining if it really WAS pop, you cannot... all you know is KA band.
