Today my v1 flashed "E" and made scary noises. I turned it off, then on, and it did it again. I repeated this, and it did not do it again. It picked up k band in the normal locations during the rest of my drive. What happened? Is it ok? Send it in?

The only times I have experienced what you described (weird noises, display of "E") is when I had a voltage issue on my setup.
I would be sure the power connection is secure and the charging system on your vehicle is performing correctly.
If that all checks out okay and you still see the issues, then it's time to send the V1 with power cords back to VR to be repaired.
