I have mounted and hardwired a V1 and several Passport 9800x50 in a GLi, R32, Beetle and Touareg. In the Touareg I was able to tap the Homelink ignition wire in the overhead console and ground at one of the sunroof motor mounting screws. In both of the MKIV cars I ran a wire down the a-pillar (BEHIND the airbag) and to the junction block on the driver side to tap the accessory post there, you can also get to the fuseblock and use a tap to get ignition. Ground points are easy to find in those cars also. All are mounted on the center visor, a $13 part if you need to do some customization. Here are some pics:
A companion for your radar detector is a Uniden scanner such as the BCT10 or 12 pictured above in the Touareg or a BCT7 as pictured below, scanner acts as a pre-radar detector:
