Default I have android programing experience, trying to gauge interest in a custom V1 app

V1connection was a nice proof of concept, but even coming out of the trial stage it has some serious shortcomings that have gone months without being fixed. I've already been able to make a test app that can read V1's bluetooth serial protocol, now I was just considering if it would be worth it to develop a full featured app. Just some ideas I have (ranging from simplest to more complex):

    *Landscape mode
    *Background operation
*Alerts played through the phone (pausing/muting music like android stock GPS does), user can change alert sounds
*GPS speed tracking to eliminate the need to plug in savvy to the car's OBD2 port.
*Pretty much full GPS integration you've seen in other detectors, hot spot tracking, user defined muted areas, location defined profiles, etc
*Integration with Trapster or other V1 users to share info real-time.
*Dash-cam activation triggers. Automatically start recording if you get tagged past a certain signal strength, to potentially gather evidence if you end up fighting a ticket in court (such as another car was passing you, which happened to a guy here a few years ago).

That would be awesome, especially the GPS speed tracking and background operation!

I thought about learning Android Programming because of the V1. I like all those things but I think integration with Waze would be better.

My biggest complaint with V1, I need my phone to be a phone.

I need my Valentine to be a radar detector. I don't want to hook it up to my phone.

If they want me to buy a separate display that's fine, then sell me one.

The last thing I want is to get pulled over in Virginia because
I was doing 20mph over and end up doing life in prison because my
V1 was relying on my smart phone.

Dude, if you can make a solid app, do it. And if you enjoy coding, all the more power to you for enjoying your craft and trade; and you might just make a buck doing it. There's a ton of innovation and improvement waiting to happen on the radar detector front and so far no one has done it right.

I'm from the Escort camp with a Redline and their Escort Live offering for Android isn't far from a train-wreck. It sort of works, but even their Escort representative on multiple forums has gone silent when asked about fixes.

Is making a stand alone screen possible to create?

This would be ideal since every company wants us to
use are smart phone to run their programs.

I for one would like to see a user customizable display for the phone app. Something a little different than the default supplied with the V1C app. Different colored dots on the strength meter and I liked how Radaractive would flash the band letter. I would also like to the the strongest signal's frequency displayed on the remote screen of the app.

For the people wanting just a display, it isn't going to happen. For one, the use of a cell phone keep's VR's cost's to a minimum. Lower cost for the company means lower costs for the consumer. I use an iphone 5 for my phone. I bought a LG Marquee with a bad ESN on ebay for $40. It's perfect for what I need.

2nd, Mike has always said that the V1 we have now will never be obsolete. So how could he add a digital display to the current V1? He can't. So to make a V2 and allow upgrades would leave VR with hundreds, if not thousands of V1's sitting at their headquarters.

I see people requesting V1 audio alerts to be played thru the phone. I don't see the point in that. I'm no android expert but I don't recall a bluetooth being able to link to more than one other device simultaneously. But I could be wrong.

I just want a second concealed display as a frequency display. If V1 made this it would be perfect.

I'd probably pay $10-15 for this app if it was solid, the current app is awful.

I always have my phone in a dock while driving, pop-up alerts with audio would be amazing.

Edit: After posting this publicly, you better get started! Or someone else will see your idea and run with it, stealing your thunder, mobile development is more popular than ever.

I'm a professional software engineer by trade, and have created an android app that sold over 30,000 copies for $0.99. I don't have the time I used to have, but would be willing to help with debugging/testing/development in my spare time. Shoot me a PM if you are interested.
